The Pittsburgh Steelers’ decision to decline Broderick Jones’ fifth-year option during the 2026 offseason drew discourse from the organization and fan base. Making matters more difficult, Jones’ 2025 season was derailed by an injury that was initially believed to be a stinger. However, the issue turned out to be much more serious, forcing him into a three-month stretch without any physical activity.
After a challenging recovery process, Jones has now been cleared in surprising fashion and returned to work as he prepares to get back into football shape. The pressure on Jones is even higher because, before the injury, he was already focused on proving he was not a first-round mistake. When Steelers General Manager Omar Khan traded up to select Jones in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft, the expectation was that Pittsburgh had landed a player with elite potential.
Khan was hoping to hit a home run on a developmental prospect, but now, entering the final year of his rookie contract, questions remain about whether Jones will be part of the Steelers’ future. Those questions became even louder as Pittsburgh’s offensive line began generating excitement with new pieces and a clearer direction. Many fans have wondered exactly where Jones fits moving forward, especially after his injury interrupted his development.
Now that he is back on the field, however, Jones recently made a simple comment to Steelers beat writer Chris Adamski on Thursday regarding his current status. That small statement may reveal more about his mindset and future in Pittsburgh than anyone expected.
"Broderick Jones believes he can be a starter again this year," Adamski wrote. "Broderick Jones says he currently weighs 300 lbs and he wants to get to 310-315 in time for playing. His biggest challenge is building his strength back."
Those comments from Jones may seem simple, but they reveal a much bigger picture about where his mindset is heading. After missing significant time and watching the Steelers continue to build excitement along the offensive line, Jones understands the pressure surrounding him.
However, his belief that he can still be a starter shows he is not approaching 2026 as someone only happy to be healthy. He believes he can return to the player Pittsburgh envisioned when they traded up to select him.

The biggest hurdle for Jones will not be confidence, but proving his body is ready for the demands of an NFL season. Getting back to 310-315 pounds and rebuilding his strength will be critical as he competes for a starting role. The Steelers have invested heavily in creating a stronger offensive line, but Jones’ athletic ability and upside are still impossible to ignore if he can return to form.
Steelers Facing Lots Of Questions With Jones
Whether Jones can turn that belief into production will be one of the biggest storylines to watch during Steelers training camp. After a year filled with uncertainty, his opportunity is still there. Now, it is up to Jones to prove that Pittsburgh was right to believe in him.
The main issue is that the Steelers still face plenty of questions regarding Jones. He has to prove that his talent is worthy of a long-term future in Pittsburgh, and that opportunity starts now. Until he shows not only a return to form but also growth through the adversity he has faced, his future with the team remains uncertain. It is a difficult challenge, but one Jones sounds confident he is ready to take on.
