The Pittsburgh Steelers came out and made it known that Jalen Ramsey was officially placed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list to open training camp. The move immediately caught the attention of fans, especially considering Ramsey is one of the biggest additions the Steelers made last offseason. It was later revealed that the injury occurred during mandatory minicamp and is related to his knee.

Steelers General Manager Omar Khan addressed the situation and provided some reassurance, stating that Ramsey will not need surgery for the ailment. Based on that information, the expectation around the team has been that Ramsey will likely only miss a couple of weeks during training camp as he works his way back.

However, there may be a little more concern surrounding the situation based on the latest comments from Steelers insider Mark Kaboly. While speaking via the Steelers Collective, Kaboly revealed that he believes the Steelers’ brass may not be sharing the full story regarding Ramsey’s injury.

"Well, the Jalen Ramsey one, I would be a little concerned just by reading their faces," Kaboly said while speaking regarding Ramsey being placed on the PUP list to begin camp. "It didn't seem, like it was one of those things where they were like, 'Yeah, he should be okay,' but I have seen that look on their faces before. That's the one I would monitor more than anything else. Obviously, they said something happened in minicamp about a month and a half ago. For him not to be ready now, I can see why you put him on PUP if you aren't 100% sure, but that's a huge one. Absolutely huge."

That does not necessarily mean Ramsey is dealing with a major setback, but it does raise questions about the timeline of his return and how cautious the Steelers plan to be with their veteran star defender. Pittsburgh will likely continue to monitor Ramsey closely, but any extended absence would be something worth watching as the team prepares for the regular season.

The hope is that Ramsey can get back on the field as soon as possible and put this injury behind him. The Steelers are counting on him to be a major piece of their defense this season, and having him healthy for Week 1 will be a top priority.

The Steelers’ defensive output has not exactly lived up to expectations over the last few seasons. The previous regime was unable to maximize the talent on the roster and the significant investments were made into the unit. Now, with Patrick Graham taking over as defensive coordinator, there is hope that things can change.

Steelers Need Ramsey At Full Health For 2026 Season

For that to happen, having Ramsey at full health will be critical. Ramsey is expected to be one of the leaders of this defense, and his ability to impact the game could be a major factor in helping Pittsburgh return to being one of the league’s top defensive units.

While the team has remained optimistic about his recovery, Kaboly’s comments suggest that this is a situation worth monitoring closely. Until Ramsey is back on the field and participating fully, questions will remain about the severity of the injury and whether the timeline is truly as short as initially expected.

For now, Steelers fans will have to wait and see how Ramsey responds over the next few weeks. If he is able to return quickly, this could end up being nothing more than a minor setback. However, if his absence continues into the preseason, it could become a much bigger concern for Pittsburgh heading into the 2026 season.
