Steelers’ Roman Wilson Earns Unexpected Chance To Become Complete Weapon

The Pittsburgh Steelers entered training camp with Roman Wilson facing a simple question: could he become useful enough in Mike McCarthy’s offense to force his way into the weekly plan? McCarthy’s latest comments suggest that the answer may involve a much larger assignment than expected. Wilson has impressed from the slot, and Pittsburgh is preparing to test whether his speed and ball skills can translate across every receiver position.

Wilson arrived in the NFL with the reputation of being a quick target who could create separation from the inside. Injuries interrupted his rookie season, while an inconsistent role prevented him from building momentum during his second year. The Steelers entered 2026 with DK Metcalf, Michael Pittman Jr. and second-round rookie Germie Bernard positioned ahead of him in a rebuilt receiver room.

The crowded room left Wilson needing more than a few strong slot reps. A receiver fighting for a role behind three prominent investments has to give the coaching staff reasons to use him in different situations. McCarthy appears to believe Wilson is beginning to do exactly that.

During comments shared by Chris Adamski, McCarthy explained that versatility has been part of the plan since his first conversation with Wilson.

“I need you to be a multiple-position player,” McCarthy said. “I said, ‘I’m going to be able to line you up both inside and outside.’ He’s done a he** of a job inside.”

Pittsburgh was not merely giving Wilson another chance to survive as a backup slot receiver. McCarthy gave him a specific challenge, and Wilson has handled the first part well enough for the staff to expand the evaluation.

Inside work fits Wilson’s established strengths. He can use quickness to avoid contact, find space between defenders and create yards when the ball arrives on time. The slot also allows him to work with more room than he typically sees against outside press coverage.

McCarthy does not want that to become a limitation. Wilson’s vertical speed gives Pittsburgh another way to stretch the field, especially if he can align outside without revealing the offense’s intention. Moving him between the X, Z and F positions could make him more valuable than a receiver tied to one spot.

Pittsburgh’s earlier look at Wilson’s new offensive role focused on the possibility of him replacing some of the inside work that left during the offseason. McCarthy’s latest comments push the idea further. Wilson may not be competing for one old role. He could create a new one by showing he can handle several.

The outside opportunity also gives Wilson a clearer path to touches. Metcalf and Pittman will command most of the starting work, but neither receiver will play every snap from one alignment. Bernard is also learning multiple positions. A fourth receiver who understands the entire formation can enter without forcing McCarthy to shrink the playbook.

McCarthy made clear that Wilson’s ability near the boundary is no longer theoretical.

“I think we can start working him a little bit more outside, too,” McCarthy said. “His vertical speed and his ability to catch the ball out there on the numbers — I think he has an excellent skill set for that also. He can line up at X, Z and F, and so far he’s done exactly what we’ve asked.”

Following assignments precisely gives Aaron Rodgers and the coaching staff a reason to believe a larger role will not create avoidable mistakes. Wilson’s talent has never been the only issue. Availability, consistency and quarterback trust have all influenced his limited production.

Rodgers will expect Wilson to understand how each alignment changes the route. A concept run from the slot may require a different release and landmark when called from the outside. Coverage adjustments can also change based on whether Wilson is on or off the line of scrimmage.

Bernard’s arrival makes the competition more demanding. The rookie was drafted for his own ability to play inside and outside, and he carries the advantage of being selected by the current staff. Wilson cannot control that investment. He can make himself difficult to remove by becoming dependable wherever McCarthy places him.

Special teams may influence the bottom of the receiver room, but Wilson’s strongest roster argument will come on offense. If he can back up all three primary positions, Pittsburgh gains flexibility on game day and protection against injuries. One versatile reserve can cover several problems without requiring a complete change in personnel usage.

Steelers Could Finally Find Wilson’s Complete Role

Wilson’s first two seasons created understandable skepticism. Training camp praise does not erase the missed time or limited production, and Pittsburgh has seen young receivers flash before without earning a lasting place in the offense. The next step is carrying the work into padded practices and preseason games.

His opportunity is more defined than it appeared entering camp. McCarthy has identified what he wants: reliable inside work, more outside reps and the ability to line up at X, Z and F. Wilson does not have to guess what will earn him a role.

The expanded assignment could make the offense harder to read. Pittsburgh can shift Wilson across the formation, create favorable releases and use his speed without substituting. Defenses would have less information before the snap, while Rodgers could move Wilson toward the matchup he prefers.

Wilson still has to produce when the football comes his way. A receiver can learn every position and remain buried if he does not separate or finish catches. McCarthy’s comments indicate the preparation has been strong enough to create the opportunity. The remaining challenge is converting it into plays.

Pittsburgh once appeared to have a narrow plan for Wilson as a slot option. McCarthy now sees a receiver capable of much more. If Wilson continues doing exactly what the staff asks, his versatility could turn an uncertain roster fight into the most complete role of his young career.
