Steelers' Offense Has Another Rough Day Of Training Camp As Players Fall Into "Sloppy" Trap

The Pittsburgh Steelers have a lot of work to do to get on the same page with each other. Head Coach Mike McCarthy and quarterback Aaron Rodgers may already be there due to their time together in the past, but that doesn't mean everyone else knows exactly what's going on yet. It doesn't help that the quarterback is very particular about how he wants things done, so that creates more strain on the offense to figure everything out and make sure there are no miscommunications, as the defense has done well so far. 

As usual, there have been plenty of highs and lows early on in training camp. Thursday's practice was great for the defense, but a deep low for the offense. Nick Farabaugh reported that the Steelers have been very "sloppy" on that side of the ball, as there's clearly a lot more work that needs to be done. 

Obviously, this is the time for the Steelers to have these kinds of issues, but they need to work them out quickly. If Rodgers is going to end his career on a high note, he can't have all this confusion with his teammates. The offensive offsides penalty is borderline inexcusable on its own, but it just reinforces the point that Pittsburgh is far from ready for the start of the regular season. 

While the defensive miscommunications were the bigger storyline in 2025, they seemed to happen quite a bit offensively as well. Even with all the new faces, that should still be cleaned up a bit with a lot of returning players on that side of the ball. It seems like Rodgers has at least been trying to develop more of a connection with Roman Wilson, but that's still not enough for an offense that needs to gain consistency. 

This is nothing new for the Steelers, as offensive miscommunications have been happening all throughout training camp so far. For now, it's not too much of a problem, as there's still a month to go before Pittsburgh has their first regular season game. If these reports are still coming up after the final preseason game, then it will be time to be concerned and question if this offense has what it takes.

Steelers Have Still Made Some Progress With Communication

Even with all the negativity about these reports, this is not as bad as it has been before. As mentioned before, Rodgers and Wilson have been developing more of a connection lately. That has made the former third-round pick a borderline lock for the WR3 role in McCarthy's new offense. If things continue to go well into the regular season, this could be a breakout year for Wilson.

Meanwhile, Rodgers has been on point with notorious poor route-runner DK Metcalf for the most part. It seems like that part of his game has been fixed, as reports have spoken about the connection the two had on plays like a 20-yard dig route. After a disappointing 2025 campaign, it looks like Metcalf is primed for a bounce-back season where he puts himself back in the elite receiver conversation.

Obviously, there's more work that needs to be done, but progress is progress. The Steelers were not very good on offense in 2025, but this stronger connection between Rodgers and his returning receivers is a great sign. If he can get on the same page with his new targets soon, there may be some hope for a better season in 2026 after all.
