The Pittsburgh Steelers entered the 2026 offseason knowing almost everything surrounding the organization was about to change. Mike McCarthy replaced Mike Tomlin after 19 seasons, Patrick Graham took control of the defense, and several longtime assistant coaches were replaced as Pittsburgh began building an entirely new identity.

One of those changes directly affected Cam Heyward. The veteran defensive lineman had worked with Karl Dunbar since 2018, building years of trust with a position coach who understood exactly how to prepare him for an NFL season. Moving away from that relationship created a legitimate adjustment for one of the most established players inside the Steelers’ locker room.
McCarthy replaced Dunbar with Domata Peko, a former defensive lineman who spent 15 seasons battling inside NFL trenches. Peko played 11 seasons for the Cincinnati Bengals and also spent time with the Baltimore Ravens, meaning he understands exactly what AFC North football demands. He once competed against Heyward as a division rival. Now, he is responsible for coaching him.
That unusual history could have made their transition difficult. Instead, Heyward already sounds completely bought into what Peko is bringing to Pittsburgh’s defensive line. While discussing his new position coach via 93.7 The Fan at camp, the Steelers captain made it clear that Peko’s experience as a player has helped them begin building a strong relationship.
"I love Peko," Heyward said. "You know, he brings a player’s mind to it. But he knows it. You’ve got to kick a whole lot of a** in front of him."
That final part perfectly captures why Peko may fit Pittsburgh. He is not arriving with an understanding of AFC North football that came from watching film or hearing stories. He spent more than a decade lining up against the Steelers, Ravens, and Browns while dealing with the physical punishment that comes with playing defensive tackle.

Heyward does not need a coach to explain the basics of playing defensive line. He is entering his 16th season, has earned seven Pro Bowl selections, and has been named a First Team All-Pro four times. At this stage of his career, the value comes from working with someone who understands the smaller details and can communicate with him from a player’s perspective.
Peko brings that credibility. He knows what it feels like to absorb double teams, battle through injuries, and prepare his body for the most physical games on the schedule. That shared experience should allow him to challenge Heyward without pretending the veteran needs to have his entire game rebuilt.
The relationship also matters beyond Heyward. Pittsburgh’s defensive line includes talented younger players such as Derrick Harmon, Keeanu Benton, Yahya Black, and rookie Gabriel Rubio. If the most accomplished player in the room openly buys into Peko’s coaching, it becomes much easier for everyone else to follow his lead.
Steelers May Have Found Perfect Coach For Defensive Line Transition
There were understandable questions about replacing Dunbar after everything he accomplished alongside Heyward. Changing coaches does not automatically create improvement, especially when the player involved has already reached an elite level. However, Peko was not hired to erase what Heyward learned. He was hired to add a different voice and bring new energy into the room.
Early signs suggest that transition is going better than anyone could have reasonably expected. Heyward is not merely tolerating his new position coach. He is publicly explaining why he loves working with him and highlighting the player-first mentality Peko has brought to Pittsburgh.
Peko understands what Steelers football is supposed to feel like because he spent years trying to survive it. Now, with Heyward buying into his approach, Pittsburgh may have found the right coach to restore that physical identity from inside its own defensive line room.
