Steelers WR Michael Pittman Jr Breaks Down His Best Trait And Ultimate "Superpower"

The Pittsburgh Steelers entered the 2026 offseason needing to rebuild their offense. After scoring just six points against the Houston Texans in the Wild Card Round last season, something needed to be done, more than just altering the coaching staff. They needed to add to their receiving core. DK Metcalf was arguably the only reliable threat for Pittsburgh in 2025, limiting what Aaron Rodgers could do through the air. 

Now well into training camp, two of the key offseason additions to that room are looking like major pieces of the offense. Between Michael Pittman Jr. and Germie Bernard, both should serve as the two and three receivers behind Metcalf on the depth chart. On paper, it looks like a major improvement from a combination of Calvin Austin III and Adam Thielen a year ago. Bernard has a lot to prove as a rookie, but Pittman is a veteran that brings a lot to this team.

For the former Indianapolis Colts standout, there are traits that he has that sets him apart from other options across the league. Pittman told reporters after Friday afternoon's practice what he brings to this team that makes him a very strong option for Pittsburgh. What he describes is an improvement over other options that the Steelers have had over the years. This quote from Pittman comes from 93.7 The Fan on X.

"Every guy has a certain trait that makes him, him," Pittman stated. "I feel like me, I can run, but my superpower is sort of my physicality, my catch in traffic, and stuff like that. Just being who I am I think is my best trait."

What Pittman is saying here is that everyone has a trait that sets them apart from other receivers in the league, but for him, his physicality at receiver is what he believes is his "superpower." While Metcalf has widely been considered a big, physical receiver, he arguably doesn't have as strong of an ability to make contested catches. Additionally, his hands aren't consistent, dropping the ball at crucial times. Complementing him with a receiver like Pittman that can make catches in traffic and make an impact in the short game is a big plus for the Black and Gold.

Pittman won't exactly be the guy Rodgers lobs the ball downfield for, but the short and medium game is likely where he will do the most damage, opening up Metcalf down the field. Most importantly, he will help draw double teams away from Metcalf, opening him up and allowing the Steelers to have a well-rounded offense. Bernard will also help, bringing strong tools to the slot position, but the Steelers haven't seen a whole lot from him just yet. He will get an extended look in the preseason.

The biggest addition to the passing game though was Pittman. There's a lot to like with him and these traits that he's describing fit the mold of what this offense has been looking for. Perhaps this physicality can also help in the run game this fall too. The Steelers failed to run the ball at times, primarily only finding success in jumbo packages. Adding a physical receiver like Pittman could potentially help the run game improve too, making this offense even better all around.

Mike McCarthy is looking to get this team to the playoffs in his first season with his hometown squad. He has weapons to unleash his big offensive scheme with Pittsburgh and that could help bring this team a postseason victory for the first time in nearly a decade. 

Steelers' Offensive Upgrades Should Work Perfectly With Mike McCarthy's Scheme

 While the defense still has plenty off talent and a new coach, the offense is where the Steelers really needed to improve on. McCarthy should be able to help on that front, especially now that he has a guy like Pittman to complement Metcalf. While we likely won't see these guys much in the preseason, it will be very interesting to see how these guys perform in Week 1 and beyond.
