Steelers Just Landed Perfect Trade Partner For QB Mason Rudolph

The Pittsburgh Steelers have an extremely interesting situation developing in the quarterback room as the 2026 season approaches. There are absolutely no questions about who will be starting as Aaron Rodgers is on a mission to finish his NFL career with a bang. Behind him, however, Mason Rudolph, Will Howard and Drew Allar are all fighting for the right to be active on game days. It's unlikely that the rookie will find himself near the top of the depth chart, so the conversation has really centered around the veteran in Rudolph and promising youngster in Howard. All options are currently on the table for the team.

A lot of fans likely want to see Howard get the nod so the organization can evaluate him from a talent standpoint. If Rodgers were to go down with an injury, regular-season action could be what convinces the Steelers that the former sixth-round pick has what it takes to be a future starter. On the other side of things, though, it's never a bad thing to have a second-string guy who has plenty of experience. That is exactly what Rudolph provides.

The discussion surrounding Pittsburgh keeping four quarterbacks on the 53-man roster is fair. All of them provide some kind of value, but it would be very difficult to turn away a key special teams player just to have a fourth signal-caller in the locker room. It's not common at all at the professional level, so decisions are going to have to be made.

This is where the trade market comes into play. Rudolph likely has the most value out of the three backups simply because he has started games in the past and done relatively well. If Howard happens to flash in the preseason, there are organizations out there that would probably send a fifth- or sixth-round selection in the direction of the Steelers for Rudolph. A new situation has developed that could present that opportunity.

On Sunday, Detroit Lions Head Coach Dan Campbell addressed reporters and shocked a lot of people when he mentioned that the backup to Jared Goff, Teddy Bridgewater, would be stepping away from the franchise. Ian Rapoport reported the news.

While Rudolph is currently trending in the right direction, Pittsburgh's season would most likely go downhill if Rodgers were to get injured anyway. Getting any kind of draft capital from a desperate team for Rudolph could be exactly what the Steelers are considering. If Lions General Manager Brad Holmes were to make a phone call to Omar Khan, one would have to think that both sides would entertain a potential deal.

This is a situation that is very fluid. Detroit is going to workout some veterans, but as August progresses, it's very possible that Rudolph could be in the back of Holmes' mind. The Steelers have been very adamant about complimenting Rudolph of late, so it's fair to wonder if that is because the front office wants to have other teams interested in acquiring his services.

Pittsburgh has never been afraid to make a deal during the Khan era. if it makes sense for the franchise as a whole, the trigger will be pulled. While Rudolph is the only backup with notable experience, the Lions could be desiring someone like him to sit behind Goff. The Bridgewater apparent retirement certainly changes things, which could most definitely lead to a trade.

Steelers Have Most Quarterback Depth In The NFL

Any organization that needs a backup at some point is going to have Khan and Pittsburgh at the top of its list. There are four signal-callers working in during training camp practices, and it would be far from ideal to carry that into the regular season. Rudolph is well respected and carries a ton of experience. The Steelers and Lions might be a perfect match for a trade in the coming weeks.
