The Pittsburgh Steelers may have found another gem at the wide receiver position, an occurrence that is all too common for the organization. The Steelers used their second-round pick, 47th overall, on Alabama Crimson Tide wide receiver Germie Bernard this past April, who has been turning heads throughout training camp, and had a great preseason debut in the team's 28-9 victory over the Green Bay Packers. Bernard finished the outing with 4 receptions on 5 targets for 51 yards. One of those receptions was an impressive 25-yard completion in which Bernard used his explosiveness to avoid two defenders and turn a short pass into a highlight-reel play that put NFL fans on notice about what could be to come for the rookie.

It was obvious after the 2025 season that the Steelers were going to be seeking help at the wide receiver position. The team not only lacked depth in the room, but also could not determine a true number two wide receiver behind the newly acquired DK Metcalf. Roman Wilson had his fair share of big moments in 2025 and looked like he could develop into a great weapon, but injuries and inconsistency left fans wondering when his breakout would truly arrive and where the Steelers would look to find new pieces to add to the puzzle.

Enter the Alabama product, Germie Bernard. Bernard was not the only addition to the room, as the team landed Michael Pittman Jr. in a deal with the Indianapolis Colts in March 2026. However, the Steelers seem to have put together a room they are confident in now, as the wide receiver corps for the upcoming season is looking promising. It has a good mix of veterans and promising young players.

Bernard, who falls into the young-player category as a rookie, seems to have already developed veteran tendencies with his work ethic and stunning maturity. He recently sat down with Channel 11 Sports Director Jenna Harner for a chat about his experience in training camp and the preseason overall so far. Bernard told Harner that he has been picking everyone's brains in practice, mentioning Aaron Rodgers, Metcalf and Pittman Jr. Bernard's maturity is really standing out, as learning from mistakes and correcting them is extremely important at this stage of the preseason -- a mindset he has already become accustomed to. Harner was even surprised by Bernard's level of experience in this area.

"Something, though, that really impressed me during our conversation, Bernard's maturity," Harner reported. "He told me he knows he's going to make mistakes, but is very excited to learn from every single one of those mistakes."

Hearing this high praise for a rookie wide receiver has to be crucial for the Steelers' confidence in their decision to invest early Day 2 draft capital in Bernard. Along with his maturity, Bernard has been all over the field during the preseason and training camp. He has been readily available and willing to do whatever it takes to make a play.

Steelers' Bernard Is Off To A Great Start In 2026

During the Steelers' first preseason game, Bernard lined up everywhere, was used in many different formations, was constantly put in motion, and was eager to get across the middle of the field. Seeing the way he understood the offense and found openings between defenders are skills that a lot of young wide receivers take time to become familiar with, with some never being able to grasp them. Bernard looks and acts like the real deal.

The Steelers have a great track record of turning mid-to-late-round wide receivers into consistent talents, and sometimes even superstars. The hope is that Bernard will be the next piece of evidence to strengthen this case. Everything will come to light this upcoming season, as the Steelers yet again have high expectations. All eyes are on Rodgers and the offense, especially with his future beyond the 2026 NFL season still a major storyline. Bernard and the rest of the wide receiver room are going to need to deliver in a big way if the Steelers are going to have a chance at chasing glory.
