The Pittsburgh Steelers have not had a ton of playoff success throughout the decade. Many of the other fan bases around the league have, but the franchise has fallen short of the standard that has been set in Pittsburgh. The postseason success has actually virtually been nonexistent, despite the fact that the streak of non-losing seasons has continued on, and the franchise has made the postseason in three consecutive years. That is something a lot of teams would be proud of, but it gets labeled as mediocrity in western Pennsylvania. The front office has been working on building up the roster to get more competitive, and there has been some success with that through the draft.

The Steelers have had some successful drafts in recent years, and that was evident as the first class that was selected under General Manager Omar Khan became eligible for extensions during the 2026 offseason. Three players have already been extended, and star cornerback Joey Porter Jr. is next up on the list. The 2023 draft class can be considered a success, and there have already been some great early returns from 2024 and 2025. Khan gets a ton of credit for the players that are selected, but a lot of that has to do with Assistant General Manager Andy Weidl. Weidl's forte is scouting, and that is where he has made a name for himself in the NFL.
Steelers insider and beat writer Mark Kaboly spoke about Weidl on a recent episode of his show Kaboly + Mack, and he shared that he thinks this might be the final season for Weidl in Pittsburgh.
"He interviewed with Atlanta last year, and I think that was pretty much a, I don't want to say courtesy, but they pretty much knew he wasn't going to get it," Kaboly explained. "I think the organization is bracing for [more of a potential] push towards him this offseason, depending on how many GM jobs are available next offseason, this could be the Andy Weidl swan song. It could be."
Weidl has a very impressive resume. He spent a lot of time with the Baltimore Ravens and the Philadelphia Eagles, building Super Bowl rosters in both spots. He has two rings from his time with Baltimore and Philadelphia, and a lot of the players he had a hand in bringing to the Eagles played a major role in the franchise winning another Super Bowl at the end of the 2024 season.

Weidl's background in scouting should be enticing to a lot of organizations around the league, especially ones that might be struggling and are looking to turn things around. That is likely the case with most teams that end up firing their general manager. It feels like a lock that Weidl will eventually be running a team of his own, but the Steelers are probably hoping that he sticks around for as long as possible.
He did what he was supposed to come to Pittsburgh to do as both sides of the ball have become much better in the trenches, but it would be great to keep him around for another year or two.
Steelers Better Have An Adequate Succession Plan
Weidl's expertise when it comes to scouting is extremely important, especially when considering Khan's background. He is a numbers guy who specializes in finances and the cap. That means Pittsburgh will need to fill a considerable hole in the front office when it comes to scouting if and when Weidl gets the opportunity to run his own team. Kaboly believes the team would have a succession plan in place, and it better.
