Steelers Have Prime Opportunity To Steal Offensive Lineman From Rival Ravens

News around the NFL continues to break as roster cuts are pouring out, and the Pittsburgh Steelers have already sent some notable names home. Elandon Roberts, Malik Harrison, Dean Lowry, and Esezi Otomewo are among the guys who Pittsburgh has reportedly released. While the organization continues to cut down the roster, other teams across the NFL are doing the same, and a lot of players will have to find new homes. 

Before cutdown day, Pittsburgh made a shocking trade, sending former first-round pick Broderick Jones and a fourth-round pick to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for third- and sixth-round selections. Omar Khan officially moved on from his first first-round pick as the team's general manager, and Jones gets added to the list of recent failed Day 1 decisions. Now that Jones is gone, the team lacks depth at offensive tackle, with the only swing tackle already being a starter.  

Dylan Cook is currently listed as the starting right tackle and has seen reps as such, but in the preseason finale, he started at left tackle. Other than Jones, Cook has been the only other tackle to swap sides during practice and in games. Rookie Max Iheanachor has only played the right side in training camp, and Troy Fautanu has stuck to the blind side after being moved there in the offseason. 

With the only swing tackle being a starter, and Iheanachor possibly not being ready, the team may need another depth piece at offensive tackle. Recently, NFL Insider Jordan Schultz reported via his X account that the AFC North division rival Baltimore Ravens released tackle Gerad "Tank" Christian-Lichtenahn, who served as their swing tackle on the practice squad in 2025. Pittsburgh could use some depth at tackle, and now the opportunity is presenting itself. 

Iheanachor made his preseason debut against the Buffalo Bills and was beaten early, but bounced back with a nice second half. Still, the former Arizona State Sun Devil missed a large portion of training camp and was unavailable for the first two preseason bouts. As a project tackle, he needs all the reps he can get, and given how much time he missed, the franchise could look to a player like Lichtenhan as insurance. 

Lichtenhan stands at a staggering 6'7", 329 pounds and doesn't yet have any regular-season NFL experience, but he does have a year of NFL coaching, which could go a long way if he were brought in this season. Lichtenhan's size is very intriguing and could be a potential asset to James Campen. Campen has had plenty of successful project players with the Green Bay Packers and could try again. 

Steelers Also Have Other Options

Another potential swing tackle was recently released with the Atlanta Falcons cutting tackle Wanya Morris after acquiring him over the summer. The former Kansas City Chief was a former third round pick in 2023 and has plenty of starts under his belt. Given his experience, Morris may be a much better option than Lichtenhan, but he will likely be pursued by other NFL teams and have a better opportunity elsewhere. 

Pittsburgh is not guaranteed to add any offensive line depth, but if they choose to, there will be plenty of options for swing tackles. Iheanachor, despite his rough start, was impressive and could find his way into the starting lineup early in the season, but it might not be a bad idea for the organization to bring in a depth piece at tackle incase the rookie isn't ready. Morris and Lichtenahn are among some of the best suiters to fill this role for the group.
