The Pittsburgh Steelers' 2026 regular season kickoff in Week 1 against the Atlanta Falcons is rapidly approaching. With their initial 53-man roster released on Sunday, August 30th, new head coach Mike McCarthy has about a week and a half to get the team primed for meaningful football. Several headlines surround the team following the initial roster release, however. Among those is the question of who will be the starting right tackle come Week 1. Rookie Max Iheanachor is working back from an injury while Dylan Cook did a great job last season filling in for the injured lineman Broderick Jones.

One of the bigger storylines hanging over the organization ahead of the season is the contract extension status of cornerback Joey Porter Jr. On Tuesday, he took it upon himself to talk to the media in Pittsburgh about the situation in a move that no one really expected from him. One team insider seems to believe that when he did this, he revealed something in everything surrounding the ongoing conversation about him possibly receiving an extension.
During a recent episode of Steelers Collective, team insider Mark Kaboly joined Ray Fittipaldo as they discussed some headlines surrounding the franchise. With both of them having covered the Black and Gold for a long time, they both offered insight on the situation with the former Penn State cornerback. Kaboly specifically revealed what could be a harsh truth about the situation surrounding a possible extension.
“Joey to me just sounds like a guy that was trying to hold on to the last glimmer of leverage he has,” Kaboly said. “The only thing he has left is to not play and not practice to be honest with you. I’m sure he was briefed on what to say by his agent. He could have just not talked at all and left it like that.”
There have been conflicting reports as to how much or how little the team and their up-and-coming cornerback have talked. Despite that, a recent exchange on social media involving safety Jaquan Brisker and Porter's agent may have hinted at something. It would make sense that the new safety for Pittsburgh is rooting for a deal to get done considering their time together playing in college.
Steelers Can Solidify Their Secondary For The Future With Porter Extension
General Manager Omar Khan has not been shy about giving out extensions ahead of the 2026 NFL season. Thus far, edge rusher Nick Herbig, as well as defensive tackle Keeanu Benton, received extensions from the organization. The defensive front in the Steel City is a very talented unit that has performed well together, so they have a solid core in that department. However, the passing defense has been something that has underwhelmed and given up explosive plays far too often.
Getting a deal across the finish line with Porter would be a tremendous boost to the secondary in terms of the long-term outlook and longevity of that group for the Black and Gold. When he entered the league, the one thing that he was known to do was take too many penalties. However, in his 2025 season, he was able to reduce the amount of times he was penalized while also putting up some solid numbers across the board as a defender. If that was just a glimpse of things to come, he could become a stalwart in the secondary for several years to come.

Having a guy like him in the secondary long-term would be massive for the team, especially if it were to happen within the next week and a half before the season opener. He is the type of player that has the skill set to build around on the defensive side of the ball that can attract some big-name free agents. While both sides do not seem to be ready to get a deal done right now, doing so takes a big step forward in building a solid foundation on defense for the future in the Steel City.
