The Pittsburgh Steelers are an interesting team to pay attention to at the beginning of the 2026 season for a number of reasons. The first is the polarizing figure that is going to be lining up under center. Aaron Rodgers has already announced that the 2026 season is going to be his final year playing football, and he intends to retire when the season is over with. Another storyline that is going to be followed by the national media is the coaching change. Former head coach Mike Tomlin decided to step down after the 2025 season ended, and the organization went out and hired a native to Pittsburgh in Mike McCarthy.

McCarthy has a great track record as a head coach in the NFL. He has plenty of experience as he won a Super Bowl with the Green Bay Packers, and he also coached some great offenses during his time with the Dallas Cowboys. He is reuniting with Rodgers which has been talked about ad nauseam, and the two are looking to recapture some of the magic from their time together with the Packers. This is also a homecoming for McCarthy as he grew up in Pittsburgh.
The head coach spoke to the media on Thursday, and he spoke about all of the emotions that might go into him making his regular season coaching debut in Pittsburgh. He acknowledged that it's special, but he still delivered a strong message to his team.
"The honeymoon is over," McCarthy said. "So, it's been great. The homecoming has been awesome, so, but it's time to go play games. It's time to go win. That's the reality of why I'm here."
The past six months have been a lot about McCarthy's history in the city and how special it is for him to be back in Western Pennsylvania coaching his hometown team, but he knows now it is about business. The expectations are high in Pittsburgh as the franchise has not had a losing season since 2003, and McCarthy is expected to keep that trend going and find a way to have some postseason success.

The roster in Pittsburgh is better on paper than it was at this time last year. The wide receiver position has been upgraded, and the defense should be expected to perform better. It is important for the Steelers to get off to a strong start against an inferior team in the Atlanta Falcons in Week 1, and then a banged up New England Patriots group in Week 2. The second half of the schedule for the Steelers is extremely difficult, so getting ahead in the standings in the AFC North is going to be extremely important. A slow start could kill the season, and that is something this group cannot afford.
Steelers' Mike McCarthy Is Taking On Another Retread In Week 1
The Falcons are a team that has had their struggles over the last several seasons, and they are being led by a new head coach as well in 2026. Kevin Stefanski took the reins of the franchise after being fired by the Cleveland Browns during the 2026 offseason. He is similar to McCarthy. He might not have the Super Bowl ring that McCarthy does, but both coaches are respected across the league. It was obvious that Stefanski would get another chance to be a head coach after being fired by Cleveland, and he just so happens to be going against another retread in McCarthy.
Fans are familiar with Stefanski from his time in the AFC North, but this time he is coming to Pittsburgh with more offensive weapons and a completely different approach. He should be able to find a way to have some more success in Atlanta, but this first game between the veteran head coaches with their new teams is going to be interesting to watch.
