Steelers' Surprising Offer To Joey Porter Jr Raises One Major Question

The Pittsburgh Steelers are missing their best defensive back, Joey Porter Jr., as he continues to hold out for a new contract from the organization. Porter Jr. is seeking a deal to potentially become one of the highest-paid cornerbacks in the NFL, which Pittsburgh has not been able to offer. Steelers fans have had mixed opinions regarding whether the team should just pay him what he wants or if he should just suit up and avoid the headache. The Steelers reportedly did make Porter Jr. an offer, though.

The majority of the preseason news in the Steel City has been surrounding Porter Jr., as this contract situation has become one of the hottest topics around the NFL. 

It was reported that Pittsburgh offered Porter Jr. a deal that included $26-$27 million annually, with not a huge portion of the contract being guaranteed. There seem to be two issues with this deal in the eyes of Porter Jr.'s camp. First, they are looking to get more guaranteed money, as few things are promised in the NFL. One injury could quickly derail a player's career, along with all of the money he was set to earn. The other major issue is that the annual number is not among the likes of some of the highest-paid cornerbacks in the NFL. Players like Christian Gonzalez of the New England Patriots, Devon Witherspoon of the Seattle Seahawks, and Trent McDuffie of the Los Angeles Rams have all inked deals worth more than $30 million annually, with a large portion of the total contract guaranteed. Porter Jr. has been captured stating that he does not need to be paid like these guys, but that raises a huge question:

What is stopping Porter Jr. from taking the Steelers' offer? Steelers insider Gerry Dulac hit on this point during a recent chat session from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

"The Steelers were very generous with their offer(s) to Joey Porter Jr.," Dulac explained. "What is the difference between $26-$27 million and $30 million?"

That is a valid point, especially considering Porter Jr.'s comments about not needing to be paid like the best cornerback in the NFL. The details of the negotiations remain unclear, and it is anyone's guess what the roadblock is.

Porter Jr. has only been improving since entering the NFL in 2023. During the 2025 season, he established himself as one of the truly elite cornerbacks in the league. Because of this, he is looking to be compensated as such. You can make an argument about whether he deserves it or not, but what cannot be questioned is the Steelers' need for Porter Jr. to be on the field. Porter Jr. is constantly matching up with opposing star wide receivers and holding his own, something that we have not seen from a cornerback in the Black and Gold for quite some time.

Steelers' Joey Porter Jr. Could Be Injured

Another factor that has played into the Porter Jr. situation is that he has reportedly been dealing with a back injury. The cornerback was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list after aggravating his back in late July 2026. He began practicing in a limited capacity on September 1, and was officially inactive for Week 1 against the Atlanta Falcons. As of September 16, he is reportedly ramping up his practice involvement and expected to be a full participant. 

This could mean two different things. First, the contract situation has not been the major holdup and Porter Jr. is truly ready to play for Pittsburgh without a new deal -- once he is fully healthy. On the flip side, Pittsburgh could be closer to making a final decision regarding Porter Jr., whether that means finally giving him a deal that has the specifics he has been looking for, or dealing him away to another team while he is at full health. 

It will be interesting to see how the situation plays out as the Steelers prepare for their Week 2 matchup against the Patriots.
