Steelers' Mike McCarthy Receives Harsh Criticism Over Joey Porter Jr Situation

The Pittsburgh Steelers hired Super Bowl champion head coach Mike McCarthy to lead the team during the 2026 season. One of his first major tasks as the head coach of a new team is an unusual one, as he has had to navigate the ongoing Joey Porter Jr. contract situation. Pittsburgh and Porter Jr. have been at an impasse regarding a new contract throughout the majority of the offseason and preseason, which is now spilling over into the regular season. How well McCarthy has handled the situation is up for debate. 

McCarthy and the front office were able to build a solid defensive back room besides Porter Jr., which was evident in the Steelers' Week 1 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons. The defense played lights out and the Falcons' pass catchers were nonexistent. This was a promising look for the team, but there are still major questions looming over the organization.

One topic of conversation is McCarthy's ability to control the Porter Jr. situation and keep the team on track to win football games. The situation has spilled heavily into the locker room and NFL media, which has resulted in a lot of Steelers players commenting on the issue. 

The murky part of the situation is the fact that Porter Jr. has missed a lot of practice time with an aggravated back injury. He has been seen in portions of practice over the past month, but has not once been a full participant. In the last two weeks, his injury status has fluctuated, leading Steelers insider Mark Kaboly to question McCarthy's hold on the situation in a recent episode of Kaboly + Mack Live. 

"Come on Mike," Kaboly exclaimed. "You're the most paranoid person in the world and you're letting some random person inside the facility tell you what designation to put on an injury report. Taking the back [injury] off, and putting it back on... that was done on purpose."

The speculation surrounding Porter Jr.'s health stems from the idea of his camp using it as leverage against the organization. The way the pieces have fallen, it seems like Porter Jr. is not going to play football until the Steelers either pay him what he wants, or ship him off to another team. Steelers fans are split on whether they want Porter Jr. back in the Black and Gold or for the organization to trade him and end the nightmare so that the team can get back to focusing on winning games. 

Porter Jr., who is the son of legendary Steelers' linebacker Joey Porter Sr., has been a rising star in Pittsburgh since he was drafted in 2023. During the 2025 season, he established himself as one of the better cornerbacks in the entire NFL. With his impressive campaign came the desire to be paid as one of the elites. Whether he deserves the praise and the compensation of a top-tier player in the NFL is up for debate, but one thing is certain: Pittsburgh needs Porter Jr.

Steelers' Joey Porter Jr. Has Stayed Quiet

Porter Jr. has still been around the facility during his hold-in, even being on the sidelines for the Steelers' Week 1 game. He has been seen taking part in practice over the last couple of weeks, which could be a good sign that he will return soon. His presence has obviously attracted media attention, as Porter Jr. has been interviewed many times and asked about the entire situation. He has mostly given short, quiet answers, which bodes well for his case. We have seen plenty of professional athletes take their situations public on their own over contract situations or whenever they become upset with their organization. 

Porter Jr.'s questionable injury situation has been loud enough, though. A large majority of Steelers fans are ready for this situation to be over and for the team to move on from him. It is hard to blame either side for feeling the way that they do. The only thing that will ultimately matter is whether Porter Jr. plays another snap in the Black and Gold and whether his presence will be felt or missed by the Steel City and everyone involved.
