Steelers' TJ Watt Delivers Stunning Response To Doubters In Week 1

The Pittsburgh Steelers started off the 2026 season with a bang during their season opener against the Atlanta Falcons. Pittsburgh defeated Atlanta by a final score of 20-13. The matchup was a defensive battle in which the Steelers' defense was the game's ultimate difference-maker. The Steelers quieted those doubting the team's ability on that side of the ball, with no one making more noise than star linebacker TJ Watt. Watt had faced plenty of criticism this offseason, but his performance on Sunday set NFL media on fire.

Pittsburgh has had a plethora of concerns surrounding the organization this offseason, with the defensive unit as a whole being at the top of the list. The group is not getting any younger, and the team's highest-paid player, Watt, had a down year last season, which sparked questions regarding his ability to perform at an elite level. 

Watt smothered all of the doubt, providing arguably the best singular defensive performance in the NFL in Week 1. He ended the contest with 4 total tackles, 3 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, and 1 major interception that was returned for a touchdown. He was dominant in all aspects, helping the new-look Steelers defense hold the Falcons to just 13 points and 263 total yards. 

The narrative surrounding Watt this offseason included many statements regarding his age, health, and lack of production. During a media scrum following the game, Steelers linebacker Patrick Queen commented on the narrative. He had Watt's back. 

"I saw the talk about him online," Queen explained. "It is crazy how a guy can be dominant for so long, and then one year, he gets hurt, and everybody tries to turn the page on him."

On a recent episode of Kaboly + Mack, Steelers insider Mark Kaboly commented on the narrative surrounding Watt and how his teammates support him.

"He won't admit it, but you can tell by talking to his teammates that TJ knew the narrative out there about him," Kaboly said. "That he has lost a step, they [Pittsburgh] need to get rid of him, and he is a shell of himself. It seems like his teammates were happier for him than he was. When I talked to him, he just seemed relieved... this was huge for him."

Watt has been one of the best defenders in the NFL for many seasons now, and his Week 1 performance showed that he still has what it takes to be in that conversation. His play has surely instilled confidence in Steelers fans that he is still the best player on this roster.

As previously mentioned, Pittsburgh's defense played lights out in Week 1. The mistakes and miscommunication that had hampered the team during the past few seasons were not seen as much against Atlanta. Some of the major flaws within the defense such as poor tackling, a lack of consistent pressure, and bad coverage schemes were at a minimal this time around. The Steel Curtain may have shored up their issues for the time being, and if the unit plays the way it did in Week 1 for an entire season, it could be a scary sight for opponents. 

Steelers' New Defensive Coordinator Might Be The Difference Maker

With how dominant the team's defense was, the coaching staff seems like the factor that turned around the unit's lack of aggression. Pittsburgh hired Patrick Graham to be the team's defensive coordinator in 2026, and this move has immediately paid off. A big issue that current and former Steelers players have commented on was the defensive schemes that made the defense's job seemingly harder than it needed to be. The schemes were discussed as "outdated," resulting in plenty of blown coverages and poor tackling angles. 

One game so far this season is a small sample size, but seeing all of the problems that the defense has had over the past few seasons almost disappear completely is a big sign that the coordinator change could have been the key to unlocking the full potential of this highly-talented unit.
