Porter has not just been a name on an injury report. He has become the center of a messy conversation that includes conditioning, availability, contract questions, ramp-up language, conflicting explanations, and now a brutally low projection for his chances of playing this weekend. That is not where the Steelers wanted this situation to be entering a divisional game.
Ray Fittipaldo discussed Porter's outlook while speaking on 93.7 The Fan, and did not make it sound as if fans should expect a sudden return against Cincinnati. His reasoning was simple: the matchup is not exactly the kind of soft landing a cornerback would want after missing real game action and full practice time.
"I would put it at 10 or 20% for this weekend," Fittipaldo said. "Just look at it from Joey's perspective. I mean, who would be advising him to play in this game? With Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, knowing that he hasn't played in a real game yet or even practiced fully yet? I mean, I don't think that's going to happen. I would just be guessing on this season, but I will say 50/50 on that."
That is a pretty alarming way to frame the situation. Fittipaldo did not merely say Porter might be unavailable against the Bengals. He raised the broader point that it may not make much sense for Porter to return in this specific game, with Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins waiting on the other side.
That is where this becomes such an uncomfortable Steelers issue. If Porter is not ready, then he is not ready. There is no football reason to force a cornerback into a high-stress matchup when his conditioning, back, or overall readiness is not where it needs to be.
Fittipaldo also touched on that part of the saga, explaining how it is not good for the Steelers to be this deep into the season with so many conflicting stories surrounding Porter. Injuries happen, conditioning plans happen, and contract situations happen. What cannot happen is a steady stream of uncertainty that makes the entire situation feel like nobody has a firm grip on the message.

From Porter's side, the logic Fittipaldo laid out is easy to understand. A cornerback who has not played in a real game yet and has not fully practiced would be taking on a major risk by jumping straight into a Bengals matchup. Cincinnati's passing game is built to punish rust.
From the Steelers' side, it creates a difficult football problem. Pittsburgh's defense is better with Porter available, especially in a game where the opposing receiving talent can change everything quickly. But availability only helps if the player is actually ready to function at game speed.
Steelers Face Alarming Porter Uncertainty Before Bengals Game
The 10 or 20% estimate for this weekend is already attention-grabbing, but the 50/50 comment on the season is the part that makes the conversation feel much bigger. Fittipaldo made it clear he was guessing on the season-long outlook, so that should not be treated like a report that Porter is in danger of missing the year. Still, the fact that the situation invites that kind of discussion says plenty.
The Bengals game now becomes another checkpoint in a saga that has already dragged on longer than expected. If Porter sits, the questions will not disappear. They will only shift toward when he can fully practice, when he can play, and why the Steelers still cannot get the messaging around one of their most important young players under control.
