Steelers' Daylen Everette Making Himself Essential With Impressive Push For Playing Time

The Pittsburgh Steelers may have discovered another exciting young defensive contributor much earlier than anticipated. Rookie cornerback Daylen Everette is making a compelling case for increased playing time, and his performance during Pittsburgh's thrilling 30-27 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals provided another encouraging sign. After spending four seasons playing for Kirby Smart at Georgia, Everette appears determined to prove that he belongs on an NFL field immediately.

The most exciting aspect of Everette's emergence is that he isn't simply benefiting from injuries or a lack of alternatives. The rookie has been consistently pushing Pittsburgh's coaching staff to give him opportunities, particularly through his impressive performances during practice. That determination is beginning to translate into meaningful defensive snaps against some of the NFL's most dangerous offensive weapons.

Following Sunday's victory, Steelers Head Coach Mike McCarthy discussed Everette's growing role and explained why the rookie has been receiving additional opportunities. McCarthy specifically highlighted his performance during competitive practice situations, including an impressive stretch of interceptions during consecutive weeks.

"I think it's a combination of Daylen pushing to get out there," McCarthy said. "You see the way he has played. He's had a couple interceptions in the competitive two-minute drills in back-to-back weeks. He's been pushing to play, and I think it's just a product of that."

Everette's ability to turn impressive practice performances into actual playing time is particularly encouraging considering the competition within Pittsburgh's secondary. The Steelers have several established defensive backs, including Jamel Dean, Asante Samuel Jr. and Jalen Ramsey. Of course they are still waiting on Joey Porter Jr. also. Nevertheless, Everette has already begun forcing his way into the defensive rotation despite being just three games into his rookie season.

Against Cincinnati, Everette recorded one solo tackle and one pass defended while receiving additional opportunities in Pittsburgh's secondary. His most impressive moment came on third down when he broke up a pass over the middle, demonstrating the awareness and physical ability that made him an intriguing prospect coming out of college. The rookie wasn't perfect, but his willingness to compete against an explosive Bengals offense was encouraging.

The challenge was considerable. Cincinnati's Ja'Marr Chase finished with nine receptions for 98 yards and a touchdown, while Tee Higgins contributed six catches for 90 yards and another score. Everette was credited by Pro Football Focus with allowing two receptions on three targets into his coverage. Chase also beat the rookie for an important sideline reception late in the fourth quarter, helping Cincinnati move into potential scoring position.

However, those individual mistakes shouldn't overshadow the significance of Everette receiving meaningful opportunities against two accomplished receivers. The Steelers trusted their rookie enough to involve him in a competitive divisional matchup, even as Cincinnati continued attacking Pittsburgh's secondary. For a young cornerback still adjusting to professional football, that experience could become extremely valuable.

Perhaps the most encouraging aspect of Everette's emergence is how prepared he appears for the challenges of professional football. Playing for Smart at Georgia provided the rookie with extensive experience in a demanding defensive environment. Everette appeared in 55 games during his college career, making 41 starts while recording 150 tackles, five interceptions and 24 passes defended.

His senior season was particularly impressive, as he registered 50 tackles and 11 passes defended while earning first-team All-SEC recognition from the Associated Press. Those accomplishments demonstrate that Everette arrived in Pittsburgh with considerable experience competing against talented offensive players. His background in Smart's defense also provided valuable preparation for learning complex defensive responsibilities and responding to demanding coaching.

There will undoubtedly be growing pains, especially when facing receivers such as Chase and Higgins. However, Everette's early determination is telling. For Steeler Nation, it's exciting to see the rookie be trusted this early.
