Report: Steelers Have Traded Joey Porter Jr In Ugly End To Contract Saga

The Pittsburgh Steelers have a long history that includes having six Super Bowl championships and so many dynamic players. One of the biggest reasons for the consistent success has been the way that the organization likes to operate. Never usually a huge spender in free agency, the franchise elects to draft, develop, and reward guys for strong play. This is why it has come as a surprise that the front office, currently led by Omar Khan, has refused to pay Joey Porter Jr. after his career year in 2025. Not only that, but the defender is now on his way out after the conflict.

Pittsburgh Steelers star cornerback Joey Porter Jr. (24) stands on the field while his teammates get a workout in during a 2026 training camp practice taking place at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, PA.

After the team's self-imposed Week 1 deadline passed, rumors began to swirl about the Steelers potentially looking to trade the cornerback. Finally, someone can calling and offered something that Pittsburgh was comfortable with. Tom Pelissero reported that Porter will no longer be wearing the Black and Gold, as he has been dealt to the Dallas Cowboys for a 2028 2nd round draft pick and a conditional 2027 6th round selection.

This is an extremely ugly ending to this situation. There is no way to argue against that. Porter's dad won a Super Bowl in the Steel City, and relationships have potentially been fractured here. The franchise tag was viewed as an option for 2027; however, it is now clear that the lockdown corner had no interest in being around the locker room any longer.

Porter now joins former Steelers George Pickens, and Broderick Jones in Dallas. Pickens was traded there prior to last season while Jones was sent during the preseason this year.

All seemed to be okay when the Steelers reported for training camp. That was until Porter ended up experiencing some back pain while the guys were going through conditioning tests and drills. It's widely believed that this was a strategic ploy to get out of doing drills and practicing. That has not been confirmed, but connecting the dots makes it seem like a reasonable theory.

The business side of things truly came into play here. Pittsburgh wasn't ready to cough up anything above true market value, while the defender was content in patiently waiting for long-term security. The Steelers will be the ones on the hot seat if Porter continues to progress and elevate himself. It's very possible that he turns into an All-Pro type of player.

Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr. begins to walk off of the field at Acrisure Stadium following the team's upsetting 30-6 Wild Card loss to the Houston Texans during the 2025 campaign.

Back in 2023, the Steelers were fortunate enough to own the Chicago Bears' second-round pick thanks to the Chase Claypool trade that had happened the season prior. The Miami Dolphins had to forfeit their first-rounder, which ultimately led to Pittsburgh being slotted at 32nd overall. The Penn State product in Porter slipped out of Round 1, and right into the hands of Khan and Co.

Steelers Now Stuck With A Small Issue At Cornerback

Pittsburgh will now trot out Asante Samuel Jr. and Jamel Dean as the starters with rookie Daylen Everette set to see increased time. While it comes off as a rather formidable group, the team lost its most talented at the position. This is going to continue to be a storyline, especially if Porter ends up shining during his time away from the Steelers.
