The Pittsburgh Steelers received difficult injury news on Monday as Head Coach Mike McCarthy announced that defensive rising star Derrick Harmon is being placed on injured reserve due to a foot injury. The move means Harmon will now miss a minimum of four weeks, creating another significant challenge for Pittsburgh's defense.

Harmon's absence immediately becomes an important storyline for a Steelers defensive front that will now have to find a way to replace his production. Pittsburgh has invested heavily in its defensive line, but losing Harmon for at least the next month will force other players on the depth chart into more prominent roles.
McCarthy confirmed the decision while providing an injury update on Sunday.
Harmon being placed on injured reserve guarantees this won't simply be a one-game absence. The Steelers will have to navigate at least four weeks without him before there is even an opportunity for the defensive lineman to return to action.
The foot injury also creates another situation Pittsburgh will have to closely monitor moving forward. The immediate priority will be allowing Harmon enough time to recover while the Steelers determine how to redistribute his responsibilities across the defensive front.
More information should emerge regarding Harmon's recovery and Pittsburgh's plan to replace him, but the initial update from McCarthy is clear: the Steelers will be without an important piece of their defensive line for at least the next four weeks.
Harmon's loss is especially painful because of the role he has established within Pittsburgh's defensive front. The Steelers have relied on their defensive line to set the tone physically, and Harmon has become an important part of that group.
Now, Pittsburgh will be forced to test its depth for an extended stretch rather than simply finding a temporary replacement for one game. Four weeks can represent a significant portion of an NFL season, and there is no guarantee Harmon will immediately be ready to return once he becomes eligible. That makes how the Steelers respond to his absence an important storyline moving forward.

The Steelers will now have to embrace a next-man-up mentality along the defensive line. Pittsburgh has spent considerable time developing depth behind its established contributors, and Harmon's absence creates an opportunity for some of those players to prove they can handle a larger workload.
The Steelers won't expect one player to completely replace everything Harmon provides, but they will need multiple defensive linemen to absorb additional snaps and remain productive. Injuries are unavoidable throughout an NFL season, and Pittsburgh's depth is about to receive an important test over the next month.
Steelers Will Possibly Turn To Young Defensive Linemen
The first names to watch are Gabriel Rubio and Kevin Jobity Jr., two young defensive linemen Pittsburgh kept around for exactly this type of situation. Rubio appears to have the clearest path to an increased role behind Harmon, while Jobity could also be called upon after spending the beginning of the season further down the rotation.
The Steelers can additionally lean on Yahya Black and veteran Sebastian Joseph-Day to help absorb snaps rather than asking one inexperienced player to replace Harmon completely. Pittsburgh now has to find out how ready its depth truly is.
Harmon provided size, power and disruptive ability up front, and replacing that production won't be easy. However, the next four weeks could provide Rubio or Jobity with the biggest opportunity either player has received yet to prove he belongs in McCarthy's defensive rotation.
Nobody in the NFL feels sorry for your problems. Opponents are simply thankful you have them. Pittsburgh now has to move forward without one of its best run stoppers, and the timing is brutal. Jonathan Taylor and the Indianapolis Colts are coming to the Steel City, giving the Steelers' depleted defensive front an immediate test.
