The Pittsburgh Steelers were one of the teams to watch heading into the 2026 NFL Draft as the franchise was absolutely loaded with draft capital. Not all of the capital was valuable, but the organization held 12 selections going into the event, with three of those picks coming in the third round. That meant Pittsburgh had four selections on the second day of the draft, and this made the Steelers a top candidate to shake up the draft order. A big move never happened for the Steelers, and the team still drafted 10 players in the event, and all 10 surprisingly made the final roster.

The most controversial selection the Steelers made in the draft was picking return specialist and wide receiver Kaden Wetjen in the fourth round of the event. He was in the middle of a golf round when he got the call from Pittsburgh because he did not expect to be picked until the final round, if at all. There was a legitimate chance he was going to be an undrafted free agent, and the Steelers spent a fourth-round pick on him instead. This showed that the team was desperate to improve its return game as he was highly decorated in his college career due to his abilities in that area.
So far during the 2026 regular season, Wetjen has not been anything special when it comes to returning kicks or punts, which has left a ton of fans questioning the decision to draft him. Even former Steelers linebacker Vince Williams took to social media during Sunday's win over the Indianapolis Colts to question the move.
"Quick, someone list what we could have got if we didnโt blow a fourth-round pick on a return man," Williams wrote.
Pittsburgh drafted Wetjen with the 121st overall pick in the event, which the player himself was not expecting in the slightest. He was an All-American in college as a returner, but he barely played any offense. His best season at Iowa involved him catching 20 passes and running the ball 15 times, which isn't really anything inspiring.

The 121st overall pick in any given draft might not seem like a premiere selection, but there are still some good players on the board that can make an immediate impact. There were still other wide receivers available, and cornerbacks. Wetjen has not been able to contribute at all offensively outside of the preseason, which makes the decision to draft him so high so confusing. There were wide receivers like Bryce Lance or Skyler Bell that could have contributed on offense while also potentially returning kicks. Not to mention, there were players in the secondary available as well for Pittsburgh to consider.
Steelers Need Another Wide Receiver Now More Than Ever
Pittsburgh is in rough shape at wide receiver. Michael Pittman Jr. was put on Injured Reserve (IR) before the game against the Colts after news broke that he was dealing with a recurring foot injury. The Steelers were already thin at wide receiver heading into the game against Indianapolis, and things got worse throughout the contest. The Steelers lost Ben Skowronek as he seemed to get his legs tangled up while covering a punt, and Roman Wilson suffered a finger injury that could keep him out for multiple weeks. Right now, the top two wide receivers for the offense are DK Metcalf and Germie Bernard.
Metcalf has struggled at times in 2026, and Bernard is a rookie that has played well so far. Outside of those two, things are not looking too spectacular at wide receiver. Wetjen could maybe contribute at some point, but that seems unlikely. The Steelers may look to add some outside help, but surely General Manager Omar Khan and the rest of the decision makers are wishing they drafted a true wide receiver with the 121st pick in the draft.
