The Pittsburgh Steelers are approaching the NFL trade deadline with several important decisions facing General Manager Omar Khan. Injuries throughout the receiving corps have created additional pressure to find help for quarterback Aaron Rodgers. However, Steelers insider Mark Kaboly believes Khan's patience could become a problem if Pittsburgh waits too long to make a move. His latest comments highlight the difficult balance between negotiating a favorable deal and missing an opportunity entirely.

Pittsburgh has experienced significant challenges at wide receiver, with Michael Pittman Jr. and Roman Wilson on injured reserve. Ben Skowronek has also dealt with a calf issue, leaving DK Metcalf and rookie Germie Bernard carrying additional responsibility. Although the Steelers have managed to remain competitive, their limited receiving depth presents legitimate concerns. Adding another dependable target could help McCarthy's offense become more consistent.
Kaboly recently discussed Khan's negotiating tendencies and explained why the general manager's approach deserves attention. While he acknowledged that patience can be valuable when pursuing trades, he also warned that waiting too long carries consequences. The insider believes Pittsburgh must recognize when a potential opportunity requires immediate action.
"One thing Omar has shown is he has patience, but you've got to be careful if you have too much patience and you lose somebody," Kaboly said while speaking on Kaboly + Mack. "He's willing to wait until that 11th hour to be able to get somebody."
That assessment raises an important question about Pittsburgh's trade deadline strategy. Khan has demonstrated a willingness to explore opportunities without immediately surrendering valuable resources. However, the Steelers are not the only organization evaluating potential additions. Other teams could pursue the same players, creating competition that makes prolonged negotiations increasingly dangerous.
The situation becomes especially interesting because Pittsburgh's needs are difficult to ignore. Rodgers is attempting to maximize what will be his final NFL season, and the Steelers have already invested significant resources into surrounding him with offensive talent. Allowing injuries to undermine that effort would be frustrating, particularly if suitable reinforcements become available.

Still, there is an important difference between wanting to complete a trade and actually securing one. Kaboly believes Khan will work extremely hard to acquire help before the deadline. However, the insider also recognizes that completing a deal requires another organization willing to negotiate. As Kaboly said, 'it takes two to tango.'
That reality could complicate Pittsburgh's plans regardless of how aggressive Khan becomes. Teams holding valuable receivers may demand substantial draft compensation or refuse to move important contributors altogether. Even if the Steelers identify an attractive target, finding an acceptable agreement could prove challenging.
Steelers' Omar Khan Faces Important Trade Deadline Test
The biggest concern surrounding Khan's patience is the possibility of losing an appealing target to another team that is receiver-hungry. If Pittsburgh waits until the final hours before making its strongest offer, a competing organization could intervene. That would leave the Steelers searching for alternatives while their receiving depth remains uncertain.
However, patience also serves an important purpose. Khan cannot afford to surrender valuable draft selections simply because the offense needs immediate assistance. Pittsburgh must consider the long-term consequences of every potential acquisition, especially with Rodgers approaching the later stages of his career.
The Steelers also have reason to believe their current receiving group possesses upside. Bernard has shown encouraging development, while Metcalf remains a significant offensive weapon. Once injured players return, Pittsburgh could have additional options available. Nevertheless, relying entirely on future recoveries introduces uncertainty.
McCarthy's offense needs receivers who can consistently create opportunities and earn Rodgers' trust. Another experienced contributor could provide immediate support while reducing the pressure on Pittsburgh's younger players. That possibility makes the upcoming deadline particularly important. It's worth noting that the Steelers did just add veteran wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling.
