Steelers Get Extremely Unfortunate News About Trading For Jets' Garrett Wilson

The Pittsburgh Steelers have an opportunity to make life easier on their offense, but finding the right addition has rarely been simple. Plenty of names can generate excitement when a team is looking for another weapon. That does not mean every possibility makes sense behind closed doors. The organization also has to consider what its quarterback needs and whether a potential acquisition would actually help. One familiar name comes with an obvious connection, although that relationship might not be the selling point some would expect.

Aaron Rodgers knows what it is like to work with a talented receiver while trying to get an offense on the same page. The veteran has his preferences, and adding someone he already knows would seemingly eliminate some guesswork. However, familiarity does not automatically mean two players are eager to share a huddle again. That is particularly important when discussing a move that would require Pittsburgh to give up valuable assets.

Garrett Wilson is an understandable player for Steelers fans to get excited about. Bringing another dangerous receiver into the offense would give opposing defenses more to consider. However, there is a difference between identifying an appealing target and finding someone who is actually available. NFL insider Albert Breer addressed that distinction during The Breer Report, while also pointing to a complication involving Rodgers.

"I would say Garrett Wilson is highly unlikely [for the Steelers]," Breer stated. "The Jets are not looking to trade Garrett Wilson. I'd also say the chemistry between Rodgers and Wilson wasn't great when they were together with the Jets; but there is an opportunity out there for the Steelers to look, and they have."

Breer's assessment puts a significant dent in any hopes of seeing Wilson land in Pittsburgh. The New York Jets would have to be willing to entertain a deal before the Steelers could seriously pursue one. Based on his comments, there is little reason to assume that willingness exists. A receiver being attractive to another team does not mean his current employer has any interest in helping him leave.

The Rodgers portion of the discussion is also worth considering. Fans can look at two recognizable names and envision an immediate upgrade. The Steelers would need to evaluate how those players function together within their offense. If the chemistry was already imperfect in New York, Pittsburgh could not simply assume a reunion would solve everything.

That does not mean Wilson would be incapable of helping the Steelers. It means the argument for acquiring him would need to extend beyond his previous connection with Rodgers. Pittsburgh would be making a decision about its entire offense. Additionally, it takes two to tango, and New York seems unwilling to be a dance partner.

Perhaps the most interesting part of Breer's comments came at the end. While he discouraged the Wilson speculation, he indicated Pittsburgh has looked into an opportunity elsewhere. There is no guarantee that looking turns into a deal. Teams can investigate potential additions without reaching an agreement, particularly when compensation becomes part of the conversation.

Still, Breer's wording gives Pittsburgh fans something more substantial to consider than a hypothetical reunion. The Steelers have apparently done some homework, even if Wilson is highly unlikely to be the answer.

For Pittsburgh, the next step is determining whether that opportunity is worth pursuing further. Adding a recognizable player would create plenty of attention. Bringing in someone who fits what Rodgers and the offense need would carry considerably more value down the stretch.

Steelers Have More To Consider Than Just A Familiar Name

Pittsburgh cannot force the Jets to make Wilson available, and Breer's comments suggest fans should be looking beyond that possibility. The more relevant question is whether another receiver could give Rodgers a dependable option without requiring an unreasonable return.

The Steelers do not need every potential target to become a realistic one. They need one worthwhile opportunity to develop into something concrete. Breer indicated they have at least looked. Whether that interest produces a move remains uncertain, but a Wilson reunion sounds considerably less likely than the connection between the two players might initially lead fans to believe.
