Steelers' Cheap Wide Receiver Trade Plans Could Disappoint Fans

The Pittsburgh Steelers have been surrounded by wide receiver trade speculation, but the latest insight from insider Ray Fittipaldo suggests General Manager Omar Khan has a strict price range in mind. Pittsburgh enters its bye week at 6-2, and there are legitimate reasons to believe this team can make noise in the postseason. However, concerns about the receiving corps haven't disappeared. What the Steelers are willing to sacrifice to address those concerns might disappoint fans expecting a blockbuster acquisition.

Steelers General Manager Omar Khan looks on as the team sets up in front of fans to workout at the annual Friday Night Lights training camp practice in Latrobe, PA.

Pittsburgh has relied heavily on tight ends Darnell Washington and Pat Freiermuth, along with running back Jaylen Warren, to generate important plays offensively. DK Metcalf remains a dangerous outside receiving threat, but quarterback Aaron Rodgers could benefit from another dependable option. In fact, not could benefit, would benefit. Obviously, that has fueled conversations about potential trade targets. The question is whether Khan believes the upgrade is worth sacrificing valuable draft capital.

During a recent reader Q&A, Fittipaldo was asked about the possibility of Pittsburgh acquiring a receiver who might only remain with the organization for one season. A reader questioned whether such an investment made sense, particularly given the team's recent drafting success. Fittipaldo's response offered a revealing glimpse into how conservatively he expects Pittsburgh to approach a potential deal.

"They won't give up much if they do make a deal. Sixth- or seventh-rounder. Maybe a fifth," Fittipaldo said.

That is a significant assessment considering the expectations surrounding Pittsburgh's search for receiving help. While fans have discussed the possibility of acquiring established names, Fittipaldo doesn't anticipate the Steelers surrendering anything close to premium draft compensation. His prediction suggests Khan could be more interested in finding affordable assistance than making an expensive splash.

There is an important distinction here. Fittipaldo wasn't confirming that Pittsburgh has established an official maximum offer or that a trade is imminent. He was offering his expectation about what the organization might surrender if a deal materializes. Nevertheless, his perspective carries weight because he closely follows the Steelers and understands how the organization approaches roster decisions.

The interesting part is what that potential price range says about Pittsburgh's priorities. A sixth- or seventh-round selection represents a relatively modest investment compared to the compensation typically associated with established offensive stars. Even a fifth-round pick would suggest Khan wants to protect the more valuable assets available to the franchise.

That approach could frustrate fans who believe the Steelers should capitalize on their 6-2 start. With Rodgers operating an experienced offense and the defense showing encouraging signs, there is an argument for aggressively improving the roster. Pittsburgh cannot assume another opportunity to compete with this particular group will present itself.

Pittsburgh Steelers Head Coach Mike McCarthy stands alongside General Manager Omar Khan as the two watch the team practice during 2026 training camp at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, PA.

However, Khan also has to consider what happens after this season. That's the tricky part about his and the Steelers' current situation.

Steelers May Be Targeting Affordable Wide Receiver Help

Fittipaldo's assessment also raises questions about the caliber of receiver Pittsburgh could realistically acquire. Fans have heard names such as Josh Downs and Brian Thomas Jr. discussed in connection with potential trades. However, nothing in Fittipaldo's answer establishes that either player would be available for the compensation he mentioned.

A more affordable addition could still provide value. Pittsburgh doesn't necessarily need another superstar to improve its offense. A receiver capable of creating separation, contributing on third down and giving Rodgers another trustworthy option could make a difference in important situations.

The challenge is identifying someone who can contribute immediately without requiring an expensive investment. Mike McCarthy's offense already has established weapons, and any newcomer would need to develop chemistry with Rodgers while learning Pittsburgh's system. That isn't always easy during the middle of an NFL season.

With the November 10 trade deadline approaching, Khan must decide whether a modest acquisition would meaningfully improve Pittsburgh's championship chances. Standing pat would preserve resources, but adding affordable depth could provide valuable insurance.

Fittipaldo's comments suggest Steelers fans should prepare for a measured approach rather than assume a blockbuster is coming. Pittsburgh can explore upgrades without abandoning its long-term plans, but the organization must also recognize the opportunity in front of it.
