Every game is like a soap opera with a pivotal moment where victory is decided. Not always the game winning play, but a play that determines the outcome, and if it went differently, a different result could happen. So each week we will explore the exact moment of drama where the game pivots on: As the Game Turns.
What a crazy game! It seemed like the football gods were helping the Tennessee Titans all day with strange bounces to gain possessions and extend drives. Case in point, the first Titans touchdown drive faced a 3rd and 9 from the 41 in the 2nd quarter. Quarterback Ryan Tannehill threw the ball too high for intended receiver Corey Davis, who tipped the ball downfield to his teammate Adam Humphries, who hauled in the catch for an improbable 1st down.
Fast forward to the 3rd quarter, Ben Roethlisberger is driving the Steelers at midfield and the ball is tipped at the line of scrimmage, goes straight up into the air, and into the hands of Jayon Brown. In the 4th quarter, the Pittsburgh Steelers were putting together a 7-minute game icing drive, when Roethlisberger was looking for JuJu Smith-Schuster in the end zone. However, Brown was again there to make the play, and tipped the ball up in the air to Amani Hooker who gave possession back to the Titans on the 20-yard line.
The Titans cultivated a 12-play, 67-yard drive that ended with a 46-yard field goal attempt to force overtime. Unfortunately for Tennessee, their luck would finally run out as the field goal kicker, Stephen Gostkowski, who earlier hit a 51-yarder, pushed this kick wide right.
The Titans have enjoyed 3 wins this season by a field goal or less. On Sunday, their luck ran out as the odds swung back to the Steelers’ favor, making them the league’s final undefeated team.
