The Pittsburgh Steelers secured their first win in the Russell Wilson era on Sunday with a 37-15 victory over the New York Jets. There were dozens of storylines surrounding this matchup. Pittsburgh was in the national media throughout the week thanks to Head Coach Mike Tomlin's decision to start Wilson over Justin Fields. The Jets have also had a tumultuous two weeks after firing their former head coach and trading for Davante Adams.

Raiders' Davante Adams makes a catch against the Steelers during the 2023 season.

The Steelers were considered one of the possible landing spots for Adams after it became clear that he would be traded by the Las Vegas Raiders. Pittsburgh was considered to be aggressive in the pursuit of Adams, but he wound up deciding to reunite with his former quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, in New York. Pittsburgh may have a sour taste in its mouth after that, as DeMarvin Leal took to social media to taunt the wide receiver for making the wrong decision.

Pittsburgh has been trying to acquire a receiver ever since Diontae Johnson was traded away during the 2024 offseason. The team nearly acquired Brandon Aiyuk during training camp, and seemed to be heavily involved in trade talks with the Raiders.

Adams and the Steelers have been heavily intertwined over the last few weeks with the trade rumors, and the fact that Adams was a member of the Raiders when Pittsburgh beat them in Week 6. Over the last two weeks, the Steelers have beat Adams twice by a total margin of 41 points.

Former Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams stands on the frustration looking frustrated during a professional football contest in Las Vegas, NV.

Adams and the Steelers had some sort of a mutual interest while the trade saga was unraveling. The receiver's number one choice was clearly the Jets, but he recently went on Up & Adams With Kay Adams, where he broke down some of the events that led to him being dealt to New York. The wide receiver was asked about teams involved, and the teams listed in the question included the Steelers, Jets, New Orleans Saints, and Buffalo Bills.

"Yeah well those are the ones that got involved." Davante Adams said. "Those are the ones that I wrote down on a little piece of paper and handed to the general manager. Those are the ones that were interested and it just so happened that the Jets were my number one choice."

The receiver may be rethinking his decision after taking a brutal loss in Pittsburgh. It is understandable why Pittsburgh may not have been considered an attractive destination for Davante Adams with the quarterback controversy has gone on, but clearly the team looks better than it has in recent years. The organization remains desperate for a quality receiver to have behind George Pickens, and is expected to go shopping as the trade deadline quickly approaches.

Steelers Were Able To Lock Up Davante Adams In Week 7

Davante Adams was one of Rodgers' favorite targets in Week 7, as he was targeted nine times. The receiver could only come down with three catches, which accounted for 30 yards. He had a bad drop, but Joey Porter Jr. rose to the challenge of covering one of the best wide receivers in the league.

This performance came after Davante Adams destroyed the Steelers during the 2023 season while he was still with the Raiders. Las Vegas lost the game, but Davante Adams hauled in 13 passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns. This was before Porter became a starter, and it's clear he was a good matchup for the All-Pro wide receiver.

Davante Adams and the Jets will bounce back. It is hard to perform well in your first game with a new team, even if he and Rodgers had played together for eight years. Right now, however, Davante Adams might be asking himself why he didn't want to come to Pittsburgh instead.
