The Pittsburgh Steelers ended the 2024 season in brutal fashion, losing five straight games. It was a devastating collapse, especially considering the team was sitting at 10-3 just a few weeks earlier. Fans had finally dared to believe the Steelers were about to end their playoff drought, but instead, they watched in shock as the team faltered when it mattered most. With the season slipping away, Steelers fans were desperate for answers from Team President Art Rooney II.

Rooney's comments following the brutal finish only added to the frustration. While fans expected a serious reflection on what went wrong, Rooney stood firm in defending the coaching staff and its size—one of the smallest in the NFL. His unwillingness to acknowledge the need for change was disheartening, especially when the team clearly could benefit from more support on the sidelines. The Steelers seemed content with sticking to the same formula, even though it was clearly failing.
Meanwhile, the Steelers' biggest rivals, the Baltimore Ravens, made a major move by hiring Chuck Pagano as their senior secondary coach. It was another clear example of how the Ravens continue to evolve and strengthen their team, while the Steelers remain stuck in their ways. This only adds insult to injury for Pittsburgh fans, as they watch their rival make bold decisions to improve while their own organization remains complacent. The contrast couldn't be more frustrating.

The Steelers have long been rooted in tradition, and for the most part, it has worked. With six Super Bowl victories in their storied history, the team has built a legacy that has given ownership a false sense of security in their methods. However, the reality is that the Steelers haven’t won a playoff game since the 2016 season. While other teams have adapted to the evolving demands of the modern NFL, Pittsburgh has remained stagnant, clinging to outdated practices and failing to make the necessary changes to remain competitive.

The Steelers continue to rely on the same defensive concepts they've used for decades, concepts that have been widely recognized by players and coaches around the league. Many laugh at Pittsburgh for their unwillingness to evolve, viewing it as a glaring weakness. It’s becoming increasingly embarrassing for a team with such a rich history to consistently underperform when it matters most. The gap between the Steelers' tradition and current results has only grown wider, and fans are starting to take notice.
This lack of adaptability is why fans have grown so frustrated with Rooney and the direction of the franchise. The past doesn’t matter if the team fails to live up to expectations in the present, and at this point, it's clear that change is needed. The Steelers' inability to evolve could very well be the reason they continue to fall short when it counts.
Steelers Organization Is Getting Lapped By The Ravens
As painful as it is for Steelers fans to admit, the Ravens organization is currently being run far more effectively than Pittsburgh. Baltimore is proactive, making bold moves to improve their roster and staying ahead of the curve by adapting to the modern NFL. They are constantly on the lookout for free agents who can make an immediate impact, and it shows in their consistent competitiveness.

While the Ravens haven't captured a Super Bowl with all their improvements, they remain in the conversation year after year, something Steelers fans can only dream of. Though Baltimore has yet to seal the deal, their continued success and strong roster construction place them in a much better position than the Steelers. In terms of making moves and staying relevant, the Ravens are clearly outpacing Pittsburgh at the moment.
