Steelers’ Controversial Quarterback Situation Is Actually Perfect: "Go All In"

The Pittsburgh Steelers are staring at a golden opportunity when it comes to figuring out their long-term answer at quarterback. They have all the leverage, all the flexibility, and a clear path to either securing their franchise QB or setting themselves up for the next one. The move is obvious—sign Justin Fields and make him the guy in 2025. Russell Wilson is way too expensive at this stage in his career. It's time to move on from Wilson and hand the team over to Fields.

Quarterbacks Justin Fields and Russell Wilson sit on the bench during a regular season game for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Fields is currently a free agent, and his market value sits at a reasonable $6.4 million per year. That’s backup money for a player with immense upside. What are the Steelers waiting for? This is a no-brainer. Lock Fields in now, get him in the building, and make it clear that 2025 is about him.

No more uncertainty. No more waiting. No more seeing how it plays out. The moment Fields signs, he can dedicate his entire offseason to refining his mechanics, mastering the offense, and building chemistry with his teammates. The Steelers’ coaching staff, led by Mike Tomlin and Arthur Smith, can structure the playbook around his strengths instead of juggling multiple quarterbacks in a messy competition. The longer Pittsburgh delays, the more difficult it becomes for Fields to make the leap they need him to make.

The Steelers must go all in on Fields in 2025. That means giving him the full starting job from day one, building the team around him, and committing to truly evaluating his long-term potential. Let him run the offense, take the first-team reps in OTAs, training camp, and the preseason. Let him operate without constantly looking over his shoulder.

If Pittsburgh does the unthinkable and gets Fields going towards his potential. The Steelers unlock his athleticism, decision-making, and big-play ability. He becomes a franchise quarterback, the missing piece to take them from playoff contender to legitimate Super Bowl threat.

The worst case scenario actually has potential to be the best case scenario. It's legit a win-win situation for Pittsburgh. Fields struggles, and it becomes clear he isn’t the long-term answer. But even in failure, the Steelers still win. Why? Because now they know. They don’t waste another year in QB purgatory, stuck between hope and hesitation. Instead, they pivot to the 2026 draft with clarity and purpose.

If Fields isn’t the guy, the Steelers will be in an even better position to draft or trade for their next quarterback. They won’t have a bloated, multi-year QB contract weighing them down. They won’t be locked into a mediocre starter out of desperation. They’ll have the flexibility to move up in the draft or even target a high-upside prospect like Arch Manning.

Manning will be one of the most talked-about QB prospects when he enters the draft. The Steelers would be able to make a calculated decision on whether to trade up for him or select another top quarterback. The key is positioning themselves to strike when the time is right. By fully evaluating Fields now, they give themselves the freedom to do exactly that.

Steelers Have Zero Risk Taking A Gamble On Justin Fields

There is no scenario where signing Fields now is a mistake. The risk is minimal—at worst, the Steelers spend $6.4 million on a one-year test run of a talented quarterback. That’s pocket change in today’s NFL. Meanwhile, the reward could be massive. Fields still has the raw talent that made him a first-round pick, and under the right system, he could finally put it all together.

The Steelers need to stop overthinking it. Sign Fields. Start him. Let the chips fall where they may. If he succeeds, Pittsburgh has their franchise QB. If he fails, they move on with a clearer path forward. While Steelers fans believe Pittsburgh is in a bad spot. Let's look at the bright side. The Steelers are in the perfect spot to solve their quarterback situation. Now, it’s time to act.
