With the Pittsburgh Steelers' quarterback situation still unclear heading into the 2025 season, could they be looking at the NFL Draft for their answer? With obvious quarterbacks like Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders likely off the board by the 21st pick, the Steelers' options are slim. They have been linked to Jalen Milroe and more recently Jaxson Dart throughout the early stages of the offseason. Since the unknown status of both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields is still ongoing, they could end up not being able to sign either one of their former starting quarterbacks due to free agency. While this year's draft isn't as quarterback heavy as they've been in the past, Omar Khan has to do his due diligence this offseason and not leave any stones left unturned.

The Steelers have been busy so far at the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, meeting with multiple prospects. One of those prospects was Texas quarterback, Quinn Ewers. Many fans had mixed emotions when the news broke that Pittsburgh had a sit down with Ewers, but Ewers did give a bit of insight to his meeting with Head Coach Mike Tomlin and it could be a sigh of relief to the crowd that doesn't want their beloved team to draft the former Longhorns quarterback.

"No, no they didn't put me on the board, which is really them and one other team that I didn't get on the board," said Ewers. "I think they were just really trying to get to know me and then, I know they are going to be at the Pro Day for me and I'm sure we'll have conversations after or before then."

Ewers was a three-year starter for the Longhorns. He finished his collegiate career with a 64.9 completion percentage, throwing for 9,128 yards, with 68 touchdowns and 24 interceptions. Ewers led Texas to two straight College Football Playoff appearances, losing to the University of Washington in the semi-finals and falling to Ohio State in the semi-finals as well last season.

With the Steelers' current quarterback room only consisting of Skylar Thompson, it wouldn't be a shocking turn of events if they were to take a quarterback later in the draft. Khan told media at the start of the combine that their main priority is securing a quarterback and all options are on the table. While the Steelers didn't put Ewers on their board in their initial meeting, if Pittsburgh likes what they see at the combine and at his Pro Day, Ewers could be one of the options that Khan is looking to secure.

With free agency inching closer, the answer to the quarterback question could be answered. If the Steelers do decide to bring back either Fields or Wilson in 2025, then Ewers isn't a high priority to secure in April. They could double up, using one of their starters from last year and let Ewers sit behind them for a year or two if he were to drop in the draft, but Khan is focused on getting the quarterback room on the right track now.

With the struggles the Steelers' offense faced near the end of the 2024 season, Khan knows he needs to get the quarterback position right. The Steelers need a quarterback that is able to execute Arthur Smith's game plan and just one meeting isn't going to be enough for Pittsburgh to see Ewers able to do so.

Steelers Are Keeping All Options On The Table

The Steelers have been trying to find the successor to Ben Roethlisberger for the last three seasons without much success. Khan made it clear that they can't start building the roster properly without having a plan at the quarterback position for not just the 2025 season, but beyond that. The Steelers are trying to end their bad string of play when it comes to January football, and that starts with the man leading the offense behind center.

For right now, Ewers is currently not their top choice to fill that role, but as the combine continues and pro days are approaching, things could change very quickly.
