The Pittsburgh Steelers’ offensive line was expected to make a significant leap in 2024. However, after the season concluded, opinions on the line's performance remained up for debate. Many fans hoped for more, and at times, the potential was visible. Yet, there were moments when the line faltered, struggling to hold strong when it mattered most. Ben Roethlisberger even acknowledged that the Steelers' young offensive line hit a "rookie wall" down the stretch, which contributed to their struggles.

When Steelers fans hear the words "dominate" and "offensive line" in the same sentence, they might not immediately agree, especially given the line’s 2024 performance. However, it's crucial to remember that this unit is still very young, featuring players like Zach Frazier, Troy Fautanu, and Mason McCormick. All three were rookies in 2024, with plans for significant playing time. Unfortunately, Fautanu suffered a season-ending injury, but McCormick and Frazier still showed considerable promise in their debut seasons.
As the Steelers work to transform their offensive line from a weakness into a strength, they have the potential with these young, talented players to make that happen. NFL analyst Brian Baldinger recently appeared on The Insiders show, where he explained why he believes the Steelers will have a dominant offensive line in 2025 and beyond.
"They are incredibly excited about the rookie center last year, Zach Frazier. They feel like they really found that guy," Baldinger said. "They're super excited about getting Troy Fautanu back and plugging him in to go with Isaac Seumalo, [Broderick] Jones. Even Mason McCormick played really well at guard last year. And then the guy that they're really excited about in the run game is Darnell Washington and what he can be — almost the third tackle with his size."
The Steelers also face a significant decision at the quarterback position.

Baldinger noted that if the team opts for Justin Fields over Russell Wilson, they will need to rely heavily on their run game to carry the offense.
"Maybe Justin Fields is the guy, I mean, it would be the perfect fit if the Steelers really lean on the run game," Baldinger said.
Building on this potential is the Steelers tight end, Darnell Washington, who will continue to play a crucial role in the team’s success in the run game. Washington, with his imposing 6’7” frame and 270-pound build, is more than just a receiving option—he is a force in the blocking game.

There have even been rumors that Washington weighs over 300 pounds. Known for his physicality, he is a natural at engaging defenders and opening up lanes for the Steelers’ running backs. His presence on the field will provide an additional layer of strength for the offensive line, helping to create a more balanced, dynamic attack. Baldinger is super excited about what Washington's role will look like for the Steelers blocking game in 2025 and beyond.
Washington’s ability to block effectively in the run game is already well-documented from his time at Georgia, where he excelled in both pass protection and run blocking. With his combination of size, strength, and technique, he can help seal the edge, allowing Arthur Smith's offense to attempt to get back to a dominant running game. His blocking has been especially important in goal-line situations, where his size gives him the leverage to overpower defenders, giving the Steelers an added weapon in short-yardage situations.
Steelers' Offensive Line Will Likely Continue To Get Better
The Steelers’ offensive line will undoubtedly benefit from having Washington in the mix. As a tight end who can line up in a variety of positions, his versatility offers the opportunity to create mismatches against opposing defenses. Whether he’s lined up on the end of the line or in a more motion-heavy set, Washington’s ability to chip in as an extra blocker will help alleviate some of the pressure on the young offensive line, especially in the run game.

Looking ahead, the combination of a developing offensive line and a player like Washington who can dominate as a blocker gives the Steelers a promising future. With Washington’s presence and the continued development of the young offensive linemen, the Steelers will have the foundation they need to build a powerful, run-first offense.
If the pieces fall into place, the Steelers could soon have one of the most balanced and dominant offenses in the league. While it may seem distant, things can change quickly in the NFL. Don’t count out the Steelers' offensive line just yet.
