The Pittsburgh Steelers are facing a critical decision in their quarterback search as they prepare for the 2025 season. As of Tuesday afternoon, the team still doesn't have a definitive starting quarterback in place for next year. All eyes are on veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who is reportedly at the top of their list.

However, the potential cost of acquiring Rodgers is expected to be much higher than what many Steelers fans are comfortable with, especially given his age—41 years old—and his past injury history. While Rodgers has been a four-time MVP and a Super Bowl champion, the Steelers will need to weigh whether he’s worth the steep price tag, which could potentially disrupt their long-term plans.

Alternatively, the Steelers are also considering Russell Wilson as a potential starting quarterback for the 2025 season. Wilson stepped in as the team’s leader after Justin Fields led the team to a 4-2 start and showed promise in opening up the offense. However, the way the 2024 season ended left many Steelers fans with a sour taste in their mouths regarding Wilson’s future in Pittsburgh. While Wilson demonstrated flashes of his former Pro Bowl self, inconsistency and the team’s overall struggles left fans questioning whether he’s the right choice for the future.

On Monday, the Steelers were dealt a blow when Fields, once considered a potential franchise quarterback, agreed to terms with the New York Jets. Fields signed a two-year, $40 million deal, with $30 million guaranteed, after the legal tampering period began. The Steelers had hoped to land Fields at a discounted price, but the Jets swooped in and secured the 26-year-old quarterback.

With Fields off the table, the Steelers are left to seriously consider their options, with Rodgers and Wilson now standing as their primary choices for the 2025 season. Fans are left wondering whether Pittsburgh can land a star quarterback or if the team will once again be scrambling to find a solution in a critical year.

The Steelers now find themselves in murky waters when it comes to their quarterback situation. Fresh off a massive trade that brought star wide receiver DK Metcalf to Pittsburgh for a five-year, $150 million deal, the team has significantly upgraded their receiving corps.

With Metcalf now alongside George Pickens, the Steelers' wide receiver room is shaping up to be one of the most dangerous in the NFL. However, the big question remains: who will be under center, delivering the ball to these dynamic playmakers? As the team builds an offense filled with potential, the uncertainty at quarterback threatens to undermine the promise of an explosive passing game.

Steelers Quarterback Situation As Fans See It

The Steelers seem to be prioritizing Rodgers, but with increasing demand, particularly from the New York Giants, his price tag is rising, making it harder for Pittsburgh to secure a deal. While Rodgers offers a vastly different look for the offense, his age and the Steelers' young offensive line, which may not provide the protection he needs, raise serious concerns. The same can be said for Wilson, who's 36 years old—still younger than Rodgers, but many believe he's past his prime.

If the Rodgers deal falls through, the Steelers' backup plan appears to be Wilson. Wilson would be a more affordable option, though still pricier than many Steelers fans would prefer. He's familiar with the offense, has embraced the Pittsburgh culture, and brings strong leadership to the table.

As it stands, the Steelers are likely aiming for Rodgers first. If that doesn't work out, they’ll pivot to Wilson, but if both options fail, Pittsburgh could face a tough situation. They might consider drafting a young quarterback or bringing in a veteran bridge quarterback to mentor a rookie—possibly someone like Wilson or Rodgers. As of Tuesday afternoon, Steelers fans understand that Rodgers is the primary target, with Wilson as the backup plan.
