Pittsburgh Steelers fans have been pretty vocal about the pursuit of Aaron Rodgers. As it’s become more of a reality that Rodgers will be the Steelers' starting quarterback for the 2025 season, some fans are beginning to warm up to the idea. However, not all fans share that sentiment, and it’s clear on social media that many are furious about the possibility of the franchise pursuing a 41-year-old quarterback. The concerns are understandable, given Rodgers' age and the uncertain outcome of his time with the New York Jets, where he only managed five wins in 2024.

Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin embraces with former New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers after a game as Russell Wilson looks on in the background.

One of the major reasons for the backlash from Steelers fans is Rodgers' lackluster performance with the Jets. Many believe that at 41 years old, he may no longer be capable of delivering the elite level of play that the Steelers need to compete at the highest level. Adding to the frustration is the perceived distraction of having such a high-profile figure in the building, which some fans feel could disrupt the team's culture and dynamic. The combination of age, decline, and a questionable 2024 season has left some fans uneasy about the direction Pittsburgh is heading.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, however, has a different take. He called out Steelers fans for their complaints, pointing out that they’ve spent years clamoring for a winning team, and now the franchise is making the best choice possible to bring success. Florio believes that fans should be more excited about Rodgers joining the team rather than being hesitant or upset. For Florio, this is the kind of move that can elevate the Steelers back into contention, and it’s time for fans to embrace the opportunity instead of focusing on the negatives.

"I would say to those who are reluctant to embrace Aaron Rodgers the same thing I'd say to those who want to fire Mike Tomlin," Florio said Monday on his Pro Football Talk podcast. "Have you lost your minds? I think Steelers fans should be thrilled with the prospect of adding a guy who can come in and actually play quarterback the way that the coaching staff intends it to be played. And at a level that there aren't a lot of guys out there, and definitely not a lot of guys you can just go pluck in free agency who will come in and play the way you need the position to be played to complement everything else the Steelers do well."

Florio made it clear and simple for Steelers fans: the best possible option, especially at this point in the offseason, is clearly four-time league MVP, Rodgers.

Whether or not Rodgers still has that elite quarterback play left in him, Florio believes this move represents a significant upgrade for the team.

"This sense I'm getting from Steelers fans that they just don't want this guy," Florio said. "You say you want to win, but you must not want to win."

Florio argues that Steeler Nation should be more excited about the prospect of Rodgers joining the squad, as it's a rare opportunity to add a future Hall of Famer to the roster and potentially return the team to championship contention.

Steelers Believe Their Roster Is In "Win-Now" Mode

The Steelers' roster is essentially built for a "win-now" mentality, with two standout wide receivers in DK Metcalf and George Pickens, along with a tight end, Pat Freiermuth, who has shown flashes of greatness when given the opportunity. On the defensive side, the team is loaded with veteran leaders and stars like TJ Watt, Cam Heyward, and Minkah Fitzpatrick, providing a solid foundation to contend.

Adding a player of Rodgers' caliber, even at his age, could be the missing piece the Steelers need. If Rodgers can perform better than Russell Wilson did in 2024, the Steelers could surprise many and make a legitimate run at the Lombardi Trophy. With the talent already on the roster, this move could be the spark that propels Pittsburgh into championship contention in the eyes of Florio.
