Steelers Great Ben Roethlisberger Knows Who Omar Khan Should Draft: "He Won't Be There In The Third"

During the ongoing discussions surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers and their current quarterback situation, reports have surfaced indicating the team's intention to explore the NFL Draft (either this April, or the following year), as a potential place for securing their long-term franchise quarterback. The quarterback class of this year's draft has been a subject of debate, with people offering differing opinions on its overall strength and depth. Some have expressed concerns, suggesting that the class lacks the elite talent typically associated with franchise quarterbacks. However, this does not include the possibility of teams finding their future franchise quarterbacks within this group. 

The NFL Draft is often unpredictable, and the success of a quarterback prospect is contingent upon a lot of factors, including the team's ability to identify and develop their talent. The key to success is identifying and addressing specific team needs, and finding the right fit for the team's culture and offensive scheme. Since the retirement of legendary Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger following the 2021 NFL season, the team has been searching for a player capable of filling the significant void left by him and becoming the franchise's next long-term quarterback. 

Roethlisberger, a cornerstone of the Steelers' success for nearly two decades, accumulated an impressive array of accolades throughout his career. His achievements include two Super Bowl championships, six Pro Bowl selections, and the prestigious Offensive Rookie of the Year Award. Recently, on his podcast, Footbahlin With Ben Roethlisberger, he shared his personal insights and opinions regarding the Steelers' current quarterback situation, specifically in relation to the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft. Roethlisberger's perspective, as a former player with knowledge of the organization, carries considerable weight, and his take of the team's quarterback options is interesting. He predicted the Steelers would take a quarterback in the third-round and gave his player choice.

"I think they kind of like Jaxson Dart, but he won't be there in the third-round," Roethlisberger shared. 

The team's current draft pick configuration presents a unique and intriguing set of circumstances. Their 10-7 regular season record secured them the 21st overall selection in the first-round. Notably, the Steelers traded away their second-round pick in a strategic move to acquire veteran wide receiver DK Metcalf, a decision that significantly changes their draft strategy. Roethlisberger highlighted Jaxson Dart, a quarterback prospect from Ole Miss University, as a potential target for the Steelers. Dart, the current leader behind the Ole Miss offense, has developed a strong collegiate career, highlighted by a combination of arm strength and athletic dynamism that has captured the attention of NFL scouts. Throughout his three seasons at Ole Miss, Dart has compiled an impressive 10,617 passing yards, a statistic that highlights his consistent ability to advance the offense and generate significant yardage. Furthermore, Dart has contributed 72 touchdowns, demonstrating his proficiency in delivering scoring plays and finding the end zone. 

Dart's physical attributes contribute to his appeal as a potential NFL draftee. He has a powerful arm, allowing him to execute throws to all areas of the field, thereby stretching defenses and creating explosive offensive plays. In addition, his mobility allows him to extend plays, effectively avoiding pressure from opposing defenses, and even contribute as a rushing threat, adding a versatile dimension to his overall game. Dart's ability to run and pass, make him a very interesting prospect. 

Could The Way The Steelers Draft Change Aaron Rodgers' Decision?

The potential acquisition of veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers has dominated the speculation surrounding the Steelers' quarterback situation. It's become widely known that the Steelers have extended a contract offer to Rodgers and are currently awaiting his decision. However, reports also indicate that this offer is for a one-year deal only, reflecting the team's continued desire to secure a long-term quarterback through the NFL Draft. This approach highlights the Steelers' immediate need for a capable quarterback and their simultaneous focus on building for the future.

The Atlanta Falcons' acquisition of veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins on a substantial contract last year was shocking. This surprise was further amplified when the Falcons, with their eighth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, selected quarterback Michael Penix Jr., leaving many to speculate about the implications for Cousins' future with the team.
