With the 2025 NFL Draft now complete, the Pittsburgh Steelers have finalized their newest additions. This year's draft provided an opportunity for the Steelers to inject their roster with promising young talent. Leading up to the event, there was considerable speculation and debate surrounding the team's draft strategy, particularly regarding which positions they would prioritize. The quarterback position, in particular, was a frequent topic of discussion.

Ultimately, the Steelers did address the quarterback position, though they waited until the very late stages of the draft, selecting Ohio State's Will Howard in the sixth round. The debate surrounding this pick has been significant, with many wondering whether Howard possesses the qualities to become the Steelers' franchise quarterback.
Manti Te'o, a co-host on NFL Network's Good Morning Football and a former NFL linebacker, has offered his insights on what Howard's arrival could mean for the future of the Steelers organization.
"For the Pittsburgh Steelers, again, Will Howard in my opinion, gives you that chance at least [to] be able to compete at a level that puts the Pittsburgh Steelers in a different light," Te'o shared.
Despite being drafted in the sixth round, Howard's final season with the Ohio State Buckeyes showcased undeniable talent. He was instrumental in their recent National Championship win and stood out individually in his conference by leading in multiple statistical categories. His impressive 4,010 passing yards topped the conference, as did his 35 touchdown passes. Moreover, his remarkable accuracy was demonstrated by his conference-best 73.0% completion rate.
Despite Howard's long-term potential for the Steelers, he's unlikely to start in the 2025 season. The Steelers will most likely exercise patience, allowing him to develop, perhaps with their experience with Kenny Pickett in the back of their minds. Pickett, the 20th overall pick in the 2022 draft intended to succeed Ben Roethlisberger, ultimately didn't perform at the desired franchise quarterback level.

While Mitch Trubisky, formerly of the Chicago Bears, started the 2022 season at quarterback for the Steelers, his performance quickly proved insufficient, leading to fan demands for a change. The Steelers then turned to their rookie quarterback Pickett, naming him the starter for Week 5 against the Buffalo Bills. However, Pickett's time in Pittsburgh ended with a trade to the Philadelphia Eagles as a backup to Jalen Hurts before the 2024 season, and he has since signed with the Cleveland Browns, a direct rival of the Steelers in the AFC North, this offseason.
The Steelers remain the perceived frontrunner to acquire veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers this offseason. Numerous reports indicate that the Steelers have formally presented an offer to Rodgers and are currently in a waiting game, awaiting his decision. This potential acquisition would seemingly align with a strategic approach where the Steelers aim to develop their recent draft pick, Howard. Notably, Rodgers has prior experience in mentoring a younger quarterback with high potential, as seen during his time with Jordan Love in Green Bay.
Despite the lack of a deadline for Rodgers' decision and the absence of an official agreement, the addition of a talented rookie like Howard to the roster is encouraging. Many believe his selection on the third day of the 2025 NFL Draft could prove to be a steal for the Steelers down the line.
The Steelers Have Options For The Starting Quarterback Position
Regardless of Rodgers' decision, the Steelers aren't without options, with Mason Rudolph reportedly the frontrunner to start if Rodgers passes. Rudolph brings valuable experience within the Steelers' system, coupled with his time learning as a backup. He's also proven capable of delivering impactful plays in crucial moments during his career.

If Rodgers doesn't join the Steelers and they opt for a seasoned quarterback, other veterans are still on the market. One potential name is Kirk Cousins, though his acquisition would likely depend on a more favorable contract. Cousins' desire to start aligns with the Steelers' potential opening, especially considering their financial capacity. The quarterback picture for the Steelers as the 2025 season approaches promises to be exciting regardless.
