Steelers Now On The Verge Of Losing Another Free-Agent Wide Receiver Option

The Pittsburgh Steelers have been all over the place during the 2025 offseason. It's been interesting to follow a fascinating quarterback situation, but that was put to the side once General Manager Omar Khan made a rare May trade which sent George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys. This left a potential hole at the position, as the former second-round pick was supposed to be DK Metcalf's new partner-in-crime. The future at wideout is unclear, much like the quarterback dilemma, but there is hope for young pass-catchers such as Roman Wilson and Calvin Austin III. That doesn't mean Khan isn't surveying other options.

There have been some murmurs about the Steelers potentially trying to acquire Tyreek Hill, but the more realistic solution is the team finding one of the few remaining free agents to come to the Steel City. This kind of signing may not happen until Pittsburgh has a legitimate answer at quarterback. Overall, however, many believe Gabe Davis may be a fit after his release from the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The main problem with this is that Davis was let go due to a failed physical. Any team will want to check up on his health prior to signing him. It does look like, though, an NFC organization is already doing its homework on Davis, which could signal that a deal could come sooner than expected.

Davis is not going to shock anyone with his skill on the field, but he is a five-year veteran that still has some left in the tank if he is healthy. He was only able to play in 10 games in 2024, but a year prior, in 2023, he hauled in 45 catches for 746 yards and seven touchdowns with the Buffalo Bills. Steelers fans probably remember the three-catch game he had against Pittsburgh in 2022, and that included a 98-yard touchdown catch.

The Steelers need to bring in another wideout regardless of how the coaching staff feels about Wilson and Austin. Neither receiver has truly proven himself at the NFL level, which could spark some worry amongst the fan base. It feels as if the team is right back to where it was at the beginning of the 2024 campaign, when the only trusted pass-catcher was Pickens.

Late in the year, Pickens suffered a hamstring injury and the offense's performance went downhill quickly. This was arguably one of the reasons that the franchise lost the final five games of the year, including a playoff loss to the Baltimore Ravens. While Pickens finally bounced back to play in Weeks 17, 18 and the postseason, the unit never truly recovered from the slump it got into in early December.

A veteran like Davis would give the Steelers options, but it appears as if the San Francisco 49ers are getting a head start on the wideout. Without many available players out there to sign via free agency, it surely would make sense for Pittsburgh to see how Davis is doing in terms of his health. Head Coach Mike Tomlin needs his roster to be rounded out a little better than it was in 2024.

Steelers Can't Afford To Be Bad Offensively In 2025

The quarterback situation is causing a little bit of worry in the Steel City. Every other team in the NFL has an idea of which signal-caller will be under center in 2025, but Pittsburgh doesn't quite have that answer yet. Whoever it is will need plenty of weapons around him, and the franchise took a step back talent-wise when Pickens was dealt. The proper steps need to be taken to make the unit stronger overall.
