The Pittsburgh Steelers are lacking major depth in multiple areas on offense. With Mason Rudolph currently slated to be the team's starter opening week against the New York Jets, Pittsburgh has been in contact with free-agent quarterback and four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers, who continues to remain without a decision on his future entering June, is a player that is far past his prime, but would still add some serious firepower to an underwhelming Steelers quarterback room.

With the rest of the room consisting of Skylar Thompson and rookie Will Howard, Rodgers may prove to be an excellent mentor for Pittsburgh's sixth round selection as well. With multiple questions circulating around the current state of the Steelers' offense, fans and professionals all around the NFL world continue to ask why Pittsburgh made the decision to let both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields walk this offseason.
Wilson, who signed with the New York Giants a number of months ago, may have proven to be worth re-signing as the veteran would fit in perfectly in the Steelers' current quarterback room. Wilson would have been an excellent mentor towards Howard as well, as Howard is a promising rookie that would benefit greatly from having an established veteran with Super Bowl experience playing in front of him.
Fields, 26, is a young and athletic quarterback that signed with the New York Jets after Pittsburgh opted to not bring him back. Fields would have been a major addition to Pittsburgh's offense in 2025, as the former Steeler led the team to a 4-2 start over the first six weeks of the season in 2024. With many people continuing to question the Steelers' front office this offseason, Adam Crowley of 93.7 The Fan, gave his thoughts on the situation.
"Mike Tomlin has no pulse when it comes to quarterback." Crowley stated. "None. None, and I think a lot of the guys wanted to stick with Justin Fields at 4-2. You got to remember, they have played a lot of bad football with a lot of bad quarterback play since Ben [Roethlisberger] retired."
Crowley then went on to speak about head coach Mike Tomlin, and the role he may have played in the teams' decision making this offseason.
"And they are 4-2, with a guy that does athletic things that you just don't see, and had zero games with a quarterback rating under 90, and Mike Tomlin said, 'Good not to be confused with great. That's why we are going with Russ.' And Russ barely played with the guys because he was hurt. I could definitely see why Fields was the dude. And it makes it more clear why Fields did not come back."
Crowley's thoughts may not come as a surprise to many, as fans expressed similar opinions when Fields was benched for Wilson last season. Fields very well may have became a superstar if he stayed in Pittsburgh, as the former Chicago Bear produced at a very solid level for the Steelers last season. Wilson, who now finds himself with the Giants after an up and down season with Pittsburgh, is expected to be the teams' starting quarterback entering Week 1 barring any set backs.
With both Fields and Wilson in new organizations and officially out of Pittsburgh, the Steelers will continue to monitor the free agency market in hopes of Rodgers signing in the near future. Rodgers, a future Hall of Fame quarterback, had a shaky two year tenure with the Jets over the past two seasons but would still provide Pittsburgh's offense with a major spark.

Steelers Also Have Some Depth Issues At Wide Receiver
As the team continues to wait for a decision from Rodgers in free agency, the Steelers find themselves lacking depth in the wide receiver room. After trading star wide receiver George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys, the Steelers lack true wide receiver depth outside of DK Metcalf. Metcalf, who was traded to Pittsburgh earlier this offseason in a deal with the Seattle Seahawks, is expected to play a major role on the Steelers' offense in 2025.
With no true wide receiver two currently on the teams' roster, Pittsburgh may turn to free agency in hopes of acquiring a well established veteran who can still produce at a high level. The team may opt to evaluate the talent that is already on the roster as well, as both Calvin Austin lll and Roman Wilson continue to emerge as legitimate options behind Metcalf.
