Steelers Should Seriously Consider Adding These 2 Standout Receivers, "But At What Price?"

The Pittsburgh Steelers have made a number of major roster changes this offseason, building up a lot of excitement about the team’s potential. However, with those additions have also come a few notable gaps that some feel still need to be addressed. As the front office continues to explore options, everyone is keeping a close eye on what the Steelers are going to do next.

One of the most discussed areas of need on the Steelers' roster is at the wide receiver position. While the Steelers made a big move earlier in the offseason by bringing in veteran star DK Metcalf, the departure of former starting receiver George Pickens has left the wide receiver two (WR2) spot uncertain. Recently, Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo joined 93.7 The Fan to answer questions about the team’s offseason. When asked specifically about the potential interest in wide receivers Terry McLaurin and Jauan Jennings, Fittipaldo shared his thoughts on whether the Steelers should be interested in either player.

"Yeah, I mean they should be interested, but at what price? I can't see them giving up draft capital knowing they need that draft capital nine months from now," Fittipaldo said.

Both Jennings and McLaurin are currently still under contract and not free agents, but recent reports indicate that neither player is very satisfied with their current situation. McLaurin is in the middle of contract negotiations with the Washington Commanders, but the two sides have reportedly struggled to reach an agreement up until this point. Meanwhile, Jennings has asked for either a new contract or a trade following a strong personal season with the San Francisco 49ers. Their comments have sparked speculation about potential moves, with teams like the Steelers being a possible destination.

Several wide receivers have recently been linked to the Steelers, with Jennings and McLaurin being two of the most talked about recently. Although neither player is a free agent, their current contract issues suggest they could become available through trade. Steelers General Manager Omar Khan has earned praise for his open-minded approach to building the roster with available players, and these two seem to fit right into that strategy.

What makes this even more interesting is that Steelers Wide Receivers Coach Zach Azzanni recently named Calvin Austin III as the team's current WR2 during early offseason media sessions. Austin, drafted by the Steelers in 2022, now has his best opportunity yet to step up and make a significant impact on the team. Many believe his speed could pair well with veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers, which is an important factor in potentially earning more targets.

Despite this, the Steelers have still been linked to several other receivers, showing that the team is at least open to adding more offensive playmakers, something that many fans would likely support. In a recent blockbuster trade, the Steelers acquired tight end Jonnu Smith, who brings all the traditional qualities of a tight end, blocking, size, and strength, but also stands out for his strong receiving ability. Reports have shown that the Steelers plan to use Smith as a receiving threat, providing more options for Rodgers.

The Steelers Are Trying To Do The Impossible

The Steelers have spent the entire offseason focused on rebuilding their roster. Many view this as a true rebuilding period, with a veteran bridge quarterback in place as they look toward finding a long-term franchise player in an upcoming draft. Despite that, the Steelers are aiming to stay competitive right now, even while in this rebuilding phrase.

As Fittipaldo pointed out, the Steelers have built up valuable draft capital through trades and potential compensatory picks. By combining experienced veteran talent with the development of younger players, the team is creating a strong and sustainable foundation. This can be especially beneficial for future draft picks, even though it’s still unclear who those players will be or what positions they’ll fill. It’s a strategy that supports both short-term and long-term success.
