The Pittsburgh Steelers have had an incredibly eventful offseason, making a wide range of moves that have nearly completely changed the team's roster. From key acquisitions, to surprising departures, the Steelers have been at the center of attention across the league, for both praise and criticism. At the center of all the action is General Manager Omar Khan, who has taken a bold approach, making moves with a clear vision for the future of the franchise.

Khan, who was recently extended as the Steelers General Manager through the 2028 season, has been receiving a fair share of praise. In a recent appearance on 93.7 The Fan, Steelers insider Mark Kaboly weighed in on the extension. During the segment, Kaboly voiced his support for the decision, and when asked what Khan has done to earn this large extension, Kaboly had an interesting response.
"First of all, his ability to delegate some power, I mean not too many people in his first time as a GM [General Manager] is going to hire a guy like Andy Weidl and say, 'Hey, we want him to run half of the organization as well.' You've got to be pretty confident in yourself," Kaboly said.
Andy Weidl is the assistant general manager of the Steelers. He was hired in May 2022, around the same time as Khan. With experience from the Philadelphia Eagles and the Baltimore Ravens, Weidl is known for his strong scouting skills and sharp eye for talent. He was brought in to strengthen the Steelers’ front office and lead their scouting department. As Khan’s right hand man, Weidl plays a key role in building the roster, helping shape the team’s draft board and evaluating players.

Weidl has proven to be a valuable addition to the Steelers’ front office, and his presence has played a major role in the team's recent success. However, Kaboly also emphasized that what makes this move even more impressive is that bringing Weidl on board was Khan’s decision. This has came as a surprise to many, as it showed a level of authority and trust in Khan's plan that hasn't been highly talked about. When he was asked directly to confirm this information, Kaboly did just that.
"Yes I do, I think a million percent," Kaboly answered.
While Khan is now receiving more praise for the roster moves he’s made, that wasn’t always the case. Earlier in the offseason, the Steelers’ front office faced a fair amount of criticism and skepticism from both fans and the media. Much of the scrutiny came from rumors and speculation surrounding the then possible acquisition of veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers, which created a lot debate about the authority of leadership.
At the time, many questioned whether the front office had a clear plan. However, as the offseason progressed and the roster began to take shape, perceptions started to shift. Now that the team looks more balanced and complete, there’s a renewed sense of optimism and excitement around how this different Steelers team will perform this season.

As the Steelers continue to fill remaining roster gaps, attention is now turning internally. One of the most talked about situations right now is the potential contract extension for star edge rusher TJ Watt. Watt is widely known as one of the team’s most impactful players, and Watt’s presence on the field has been key to success. However, negotiations surrounding his extension appear to be moving slowly, which is raising concerns among fans. Given Watt’s status as a fan favorite and impact on the defense, all eyes are now on Khan and the front office to see whether they can reach a deal to keep him in Pittsburgh for the long haul.
The Steelers Have A Clear Plan In Place
Since stepping into the role of general manager, Khan has had a clear vision to keep the roster competitive, while also building a strong foundation for the future. He hasn’t hesitated to make bold moves that align with that long-term plan. Now that Khan has signed an extension, he has the time and support needed to fully carry out his strategy. With the direction the team is heading, fans are excited to see how his plan continues to take shape in the future.
