Steelers' Cameron Heyward Honored As A Top 3 Pittsburgh DL Legend: "I Don't Know Who I Am Putting Ahead Of Cam"

The Pittsburgh Steelers are a franchise built on tradition, grit, and continuous success. Throughout their history, they've been known for producing leaders who posses these traits, but also dominate on the field at every position. Recently, defensive lineman Cameron Heyward was honored by Steelers insider Mark Kaboly, who named him among the top three defensive linemen in team history.

During a recent appearance on 93.7 The Fan, Kaboly joined the show to discuss a variety of Steelers related topics. When the conversation turned to Steeler legends, they talked about the importance of playoff success in defining a player's legacy. However, Kaboly pushed back on that notion, saying he doesn’t necessarily agree. Kaboly shared his top picks of legendary defensive linemen, and notably included Heyward on his list.

"Other than Mean Joe [Greene], and I know Ernie Stautner is before me, I don't know who I am putting ahead of Cam Heyward," Kaboly said.

It’s important to clarify that this list focuses specifically on defensive linemen, so this list doesn't include players from other positions. The Steelers have produced legendary talent across the board, but each position demands unique skills and is judged by different standards.

What’s undeniable is the impact Heyward has had on the Steelers' organization. This offseason, he’s been a frequent topic of discussion, mainly because of his age. At 36, Heyward is considered older by NFL standards, especially given football's physical demands. While his on-field performance still mirrors that of a younger player, the reality is that his career could be winding down in the next few years. Heyward's contract ends following the 2026 season.

Heyward’s legacy is sure to impact the next generation of players. Off the field, he’s already a role model, having been consistently nominated for the prestigious Walter Payton Man of the Year Award and winning the league-wide honor in 2023. It’s very tough to do, and while their moves look promising on paper, the real test will come once the season kicks off.

Heyward isn’t the only veteran on the team who is approaching the later stages of his career, as there are several other players also nearing the end of their playing days. With time running out for some of these players, the Steelers have no intention of simply giving up or tanking. Instead, their clear focus is on remaining competitive and fighting for wins. 

The ultimate goal remains the same: to win games and compete at a high level. With recent playoff appearances ending quickly, fans want to see this new team make a deep run for playoff success.
