The Pittsburgh Steelers drafted linebacker Joey Porter Sr. in the third round of the 1999 NFL Draft. Porter quickly made his role known on the defense, becoming the perfect enforcer for the Steelers. Porter left the Steelers after the 2006 NFL season when the team was transitioning to then-new Head Coach Mike Tomlin. During this period of change, the Steelers decided to release Porter. Although he went on to play for other teams, his departure marked the end of an era in Pittsburgh’s defensive history. Tomlin and Porter would end up becoming close friends, even though he never coached the linebacker
In a recent interview with 93.7 The Fan, Porter shared that he never wanted to leave Pittsburgh. His comments revealed that the decision to part ways was driven by the team’s transition rather than his desire to move on. Porter’s connection to the Steelers remains strong even years after his exit.
"Even when I was in Arizona and Miami, I would see Omar [Khan] and the guys, and I was always hoping that I would get a chance to come back and put it on and finish there in a different role, because I never wanted to leave," Porter said. "It was Pittsburgh. I fit the city, I fit the style of how we going to play."
Porter never got the chance to come back and finish his career with the Steelers. After being released by Pittsburgh, he went on to play three seasons with the Miami Dolphins and two with the Arizona Cardinals. In 2008, while with the Dolphins, Porter recorded an impressive 17.5 sacks, proving he still had elite talent. During his time with the Steelers, he earned three Pro Bowl selections and was named All-Pro once.
Over the course of his entire career, Porter made four Pro Bowls and won a Super Bowl with Pittsburgh. On Saturday, it was announced that Porter will officially be welcomed into the Steelers Hall of Honor, a testament to his lasting impact on the franchise. When Team President Art Rooney II spoke about Porter’s induction, he highlighted the linebacker’s crucial role during the Steelers’ Super Bowl XL run.

Rooney emphasized that Porter was not only a dominant enforcer but also a natural leader of that defense. The unit relied heavily on his fearless presence, and both Rooney and the Steelers organization credit Porter significantly for the team’s success in winning the Super Bowl in Detroit.
Porter’s legacy with the Steelers goes far beyond statistics. His combination of skill, intensity, and leadership helped define one of the franchise’s most memorable defenses. Even years after his departure, Porter remains a beloved figure in Pittsburgh and a symbol of the toughness and determination that have long been hallmarks of Steelers football.
Steelers' Joey Porter Sr. Now Watching His Son Thrive In Pittsburgh
It was a full-circle moment for Porter Sr. to be inducted into the Steelers Hall of Honor on the very same day as his son, Joey Porter Jr.’s birthday. While Porter Sr. never got the chance to finish his career with the Steelers the way he had hoped, he is now fortunate to watch his son carry on the family legacy in the Steel City. Seeing Porter Jr. thrive in Pittsburgh brings a special kind of pride and continuity to the Porter name.

Porter Jr. is heading into his third NFL season, widely viewed as a make-or-break year for his career. With expectations mounting, this 2025 season will be crucial if he wants to establish himself among the league’s top cornerbacks and earn the kind of contract that reflects that elite status. The pressure is on, but the legacy and determination passed down from his father could be the driving force behind his success.
