Steelers' Ben Roethlisberger Had Surprise Of Being Inducted To Hall Of Honor With Maurkice Pouncey Ruined By Mike Tomlin

The Pittsburgh Steelers have an incredibly storied history that features several Hall of Fame players and coaches to go along with six Super Bowl championships. The standard in the Steel City is being competitive each and every year, which Head Coach Mike Tomlin has done a good job of since taking over in 2007. It didn't hurt that the organization was led by Ben Roethlisberger for nearly two decades in the 21st century because as long as he was healthy, he gave the franchise a chance to win every week, regardless of the circumstances.

Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin and retired quarterback Ben Roethlisberger look on as the team practices at the UPMC Sports Complex in Pittsburgh, PA.

It was recently announced that Roethlisberger will be inducted into the Steelers' Hall of Honor in December, and he will receive the recognition alongside his long-time center, Maurkice Pouncey, as well as Joey Porter Sr. While it is a relatively small class, all three individuals made their marks on the organization and the city of Pittsburgh as a whole.

Speaking publicly for the first time since the announcement, Roethlisberger, on his podcast, Footbahlin with Ben Roethlisberger, detailed the moment that Team President Art Rooney II called him to let him know he was a worthy recipient in 2025. The future Hall of Famer tried getting Rooney to tell him about the class altogether, but he kept his lips sealed.

"He told me, 'This year, we want to induct you into our Hall of Honor,' Roethlisberger said. "I'm just like, 'Wow that's so awesome,' and I was like, 'Can you tell me who else I'm going in with?' And he's like, 'I haven't told, I haven't called them yet,' so he goes, 'I'd like to keep it quiet until I talk to them,' and I was thinking, 'Mister, I don't even have social media.'"

Fast forward to a text conversation that Roethlisberger had with Tomlin, his former coach, and the news of the signal-caller going into the Hall of Honor with his close friend and former teammate in Pouncey was given away by Tomlin.

"When training camp started, I think that was maybe like a Thursday, I texted Coach [Tomlin], and I was like, 'Hey congrats on another camp, good luck.' Just like a short little text, and he texts me right back saying, 'Hey, congrats on the Hall of Honor, so cool for you and Pounce to go in together,' and I was like, 'Oh!'"

Roethlisberger's expression on the podcast after he told the story made it clear that he had no idea Pouncey and him would be celebrated side by side in December, which potentially means Tomlin ruined a small secret that was supposed to eventually be a moment for both Roethlisberger and Pouncey to find out together that they would receive the credit they deserve with one another.

There will be very few dry eyes at Acrisure Stadium when Roethlisberger, Pouncey and Porter are all inducted into the Steelers' Hall of Honor. The trio made a significant impact for the franchise and while it's easy to argue that Porter will take a backseat to the one-time duo on offense, Joey Porter Jr. being on the current team in 2025 makes Sr's honor also special. It is sure to be an awesome night in the Steel City that fans have been waiting for.

Steelers Will Look To Take Care Of Miami Dolphins During Big Week 15 Contest

Fans will have to wait nearly the entire season to watch the new class of Pittsburgh's Hall of Honor be celebrated, and much of the 2025 season will be over with in December. The Miami Dolphins will come to town, and Minkah Fitzpatrick will have revenge on his mind as he prepares to try and defeat the team that traded him, while also spoiling an evening of excitement and celebration.
