The Pittsburgh Steelers have had plenty of struggles on offense early in training camp, and it has led to concerns being raised about the abilities and cohesiveness of the unit. When the best receiver over the first two weeks of training camp is arguably Scotty Miller, there are serious problems, especially after trading for a big-time wideout in DK Metcalf and paying him like an elite receiver. Pittsburgh has about a month to get things right if they want to be ready for NFL-caliber defenses.

Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf hauls in a pass as the team practices during 2025 mandatory minicamp at the UPMC Sports Complex in Pittsburgh, PA.
However, things have already turned around, it seems. After a disastrous practice on Sunday, August 3rd, the Steelers had a scheduled day off, and the offense started rolling. They won Seven Shots by a commanding score of 5-2, and they continued to wear out the defense all day long in 1v1, 7v7, and 11v11.
Arguably the first team offense’s best day. Everyone looked solid. Probably helped the defense was down a few stars, but the offense took advantage. Was good to see.

Obviously, one good day of training camp is not nearly enough, and the offense still has some work to do. The offense clearly knows that as well. SteelerNation.com writer Jake Boico reported that Metcalf and Aaron Rodgers stayed back after practice continued to work on the passing game. They had a lot of success on different routes, like slants and outs, but they could still use some work on go routes. At the very least, Metcalf seems to be a better route runner than his days with the Seattle Seahawks.

DK Metcalf (left) and Aaron Rodgers are going to great lengths to establish chemistry this season for the Steelers.
Clearly, the offense was embarrassed by their recent performances, especially on Sunday. The Steelers' supposedly elite defense is not a good excuse for the lack of chemistry and chunk plays. Iron sharpens iron, and the best way for this unit to develop and thrive together is to go against one of the top defenses in the NFL. If you want to be the best, you have to beat the best. That's what Pittsburgh is trying to do here.
It doesn't stop at Metcalf and Rodgers, however. Roman Wilson had a great day of camp after not being on the same page as his quarterback all throughout Sunday. The 41-year-old was not pleased with his second-year wideout, and it showed during camp. The two seem to have quickly made amends, and it showed on Tuesday.
That was also not enough for Wilson. While Rodgers worked with Metcalf after practice, the former Michigan standout went to the Jugs machine to make sure Tuesday's practice was not a fluke.

Sometimes, you have to hit rock bottom to understand your flaws. Sunday's practice was abysmal all around, as the offense could get absolutely nothing going against the opposing defense. The third stringers were the most exciting unit moving the football, and that was concerning. The first and second team units were able to turn the narrative around and fix many of the issues they had, for now at least.

Steelers Have First Test Coming Up
The Steelers will be playing in their first preseason game on Saturday, August 9th: a road game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The game will be in Florida, so the heat and humidity will likely be a factor, even though it will be a night game. With the young offense looking to develop and continue gaining chemistry, it won't be surprising if most or all of the projected starters play in this contest. This will be their first shot at proving that this one practice was not just a fluke.
What do you think about the Steelers' offense finally showing up in training camp, then continuing to work after practice? Let us know in the comments or on X at @Steelers_ChrisB.
