The Pittsburgh Steelers hosted a joint practice with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers coming to town. It was exciting for Steelers fans to hear about the practice and what transpired during. The Steelers’ offense came out strong, landing some early shots on Tampa Bay’s defense and showing flashes of the potential that has fans optimistic heading into the season.

However, as the practice went on, momentum shifted. Per reports from those in attendance, the Steelers began to struggle to contain the Buccaneers’ explosive offense. That raised some concern considering the organization made major offseason investments in their defense and secondary with the goal of limiting high-powered attacks.

Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers addressed the media on Tuesday to share his perspective on the joint practice. Rodgers, who has quickly established himself as a vocal leader on the team, offered eye-opening insight into what he took away from the experience. Rather than focusing solely on the struggles, Rodgers emphasized the value of facing a talented opponent in a competitive setting.
"I think it was good for us to get some work in," Rodgers told the Pittsburgh media on Tuesday. "I felt like there is a lot of film to correct. Failure is always best this time of year to learn from and let the coaches, let [Arthur Smith] go through it."
He praised the Buccaneers for the challenges they presented, noting that iron sharpens iron and that these moments are vital for Pittsburgh’s growth.

His comments gave fans a sense of balance by acknowledging the bumps in the road while also reminding everyone that joint practices are about preparation, learning, and building chemistry for the regular season.
"I thought we started practice very well in the seven shots," Rodgers said. "And they kind of got after us in the team run. It was very correctable things that we kind of messed up on angle wise... I felt like we got after them pretty good in the third down periods. You know we had a chance in two minute... but good film to work on. They had their guys. The thing I loved was that they didn't have fans there so they felt comfortable bringing a lot of different pressures so I thought it was good work for us in the protection game especially."
Defensive lapses were noticeable, especially when Tampa Bay’s receivers were able to find space down the field. While it is only a practice, Steelers fans have been eager to see immediate improvement in the pass coverage unit, particularly after trades and free agent signings reshaped the roster.
Steelers Got Valuable Work In Against Tampa Bay
The expectation has been that Pittsburgh would enter the season with a more disciplined and aggressive defense, but the Buccaneers’ ability to sustain drives and hit on big plays highlighted areas that still need tightening up. For a fan base that prides itself on dominant defense, the uneven showing naturally sparked questions about whether the new pieces can quickly come together.

The results of the practice or even the preseason games do not really matter. What does matter is learning from the tape the team gets from these offseason experiences and correcting mistakes by Week 1 against the New York Jets. The Steelers' 2025 season is filled with storylines and expectations, though no one truly knows just how good or bad this football team will actually be this year.
