Steelers' Arthur Smith Issued A Challenge To Aaron Rodgers And DK Metcalf After Being Outplayed

The Pittsburgh Steelers have some interesting expectations for their 2025 season. It all starts with what the 41-year-old quarterback Aaron Rodgers can give to the offense. If he can get this group just above average and at least semi-productive, the Steelers’ defense should be strong enough to carry them and keep them in contender status. Of course, to make that happen, Rodgers and star wide receiver DK Metcalf will need to deliver consistently and play at a high level. Their ability to connect in crucial moments could very well determine how far the Steelers go this season.

Early reports out of training camp suggest that Rodgers has been steadily improving in terms of building chemistry with his offensive weapons. The connection with Metcalf has been the focal point, as Pittsburgh is banking on their new passing duo to help balance an offense that will still lean heavily on its running game. While the flashes have been there, it has not been a seamless process, and some growing pains remain as Rodgers adapts to both a new system and younger skill players around him. The potential is there, but it’s clear the offense is still a work in progress.

Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo recently shared his perspective on the situation, noting in a Post-Gazette Sports clip that while Rodgers is making progress, the offense has yet to fully click. Timing, execution, and consistency are still issues that need to be ironed out before the regular season kicks off.

"I think after the way the offense was dominated yesterday, they wanted to respond," Fittipaldo explained. "I think DK said when he talked to us after practice that Arthur [Smith] challenged them in the meeting room yesterday. They wanted to come out and show some fight today."

The Steelers’ defense is loaded with highly compensated superstars, and that may be one of the reasons the offense has struggled to get going. Perhaps the unit is simply going up against a truly elite defense in practice, or maybe the offense is still going to be a lingering problem.

Fittipaldo believes Rodgers has shown improvement, but there are still far too many passes not being completed. Steelers fans are hopeful that the chemistry between Rodgers and his wide receivers gets going before their Week 1 game against the New York Jets.

"There are a lot of new faces on offense and on defense," Fittipaldo said. "Especially on offense, I think you can still see. Aaron Rodgers was better today, but he is still trying to get on the same page with his wide receivers. A lot of balls on the ground still as they try to get their chemistry down."

Steelers' Offense Doesn't Have To Be Insanely Good In 2025

The Steelers’ offense doesn’t need to be truly elite, and they don’t have to be the best in the NFL. Of course, if they could reach that level, it would greatly improve their chances of winning a playoff game and maybe even competing for a Super Bowl. Realistically, the Steelers just need their offense to be above average, and if they can achieve that, they will be a very tough football team to beat.

For the Steelers, that means patience and trust in their future Hall of Fame quarterback, but also an urgent push to make sure Rodgers and Metcalf are firing on all cylinders when the games matter. With a defense built to dominate, Pittsburgh’s hopes for 2025 ultimately come down to whether the offense can rise to the challenge.
