Steelers Fans Get Bad News As Improvements On The Offensive Side Of The Ball See New Challenge

The Pittsburgh Steelers are heading into the 2025 NFL season with a very different roster than what was seen in 2024. The offense and defense have both seen some significant additions throughout the offseason, but fans would like to see General Manager Omar Khan continue to construct and improve the roster ahead of the regular season. One of the positions that should be addressed is wide receiver, as DK Metcalf is the clear top option in the room, but Calvin Austin III and Roman Wilson are next in line. Austin is currently battling back from injury, and Wilson has yet to see a target in his NFL career.

Pittsburgh has been desperate for help at wide receiver for what feels like years. Khan was in serious pursuit of Brandon Aiyuk for months leading up to the 2024 season, but a trade never came to fruition as the receiver signed a new extension with the San Francisco 49ers. The Steelers would still like to upgrade at wide receiver, and finding a trade or signing a wide receiver ahead of the start of the regular season is certainly a possibility. The only issue is that there is going to be serious competition in that regard, as several other teams are trying to find help at the position too.

The New York Jets, Minnesota Vikings, and 49ers are three other teams that are fighting to improve their wide receiver situation. There are likely other teams around the league who would be interested as well, but those are the only three that have been reported up until this point. These teams will be looking for a trade, or to sign a player who gets released when rosters get cut down at the end of August. Pittsburgh is in the hunt for wide receiver help, and the organization had Gabe Davis in for a second visit on Tuesday, but he once again left without a contract.

This leaves the Steelers searching for another veteran free agent, or the organization could be patient and wait until rosters are trimmed. One team specifically mentioned earlier that is going to be a serious threat in searching for a wide receiver is the Vikings, as they have a fairly attractive situation going on in Minnesota.

Justin Jefferson suffered a hamstring injury early on in training camp, but he recently returned to practice. Jordan Addison will be out for the first three games of the 2025 season due to a suspension. The organization needs some insurance at wide receiver with Addison missing games and Jefferson bouncing back from a soft-tissue injury. With a young, potential franchise-quarterback in Minnesota to go along with a prolific passing game, they seem to be an attractive landing spot for any wide receiver.

Steelers Should Be Patient And Wait Until Rosters Are Cut Down To Make A Move At Receiver

If Pittsburgh is not going to sign Davis, the organization should be patient and wait until the end of August when rosters are cut down. Teams like the New England Patriots, Green Bay Packers, and Kansas City Chiefs could be cutting receivers who might be improvements on Pittsburgh's roster. This includes a player like Ja'Lynn Polk from New England, who was a second-round pick in 2024. He has struggled so far and could be released under the new coaching regime in New England.

If the Steelers can't get anything to come together, roster cut down day is going to be a good time to go shopping at wide receiver.
