The Pittsburgh Steelers are getting ready for a 2025 NFL season filled with drama and uncertainty. The arrival of the now 41-year-old quarterback Aaron Rodgers has generated plenty of intrigue, as the future Hall of Famer looks to add another chapter to his legendary career. He managed to win only five games in the 2024 season with the New York Jets, but Mike Tomlin and the Steelers still believe the four-time league MVP has plenty left in the tank.

However, if the Steelers are truly going to emerge as a top contender in 2025, many believe they still need to add one more proven veteran at wide receiver. With 53-man rosters around the league beginning to take shape, opportunities are opening for potential moves that could strengthen Pittsburgh’s offense.

Rumors and speculation have swirled throughout the offseason, and Rodgers himself has become part of the conversation. According to Green Bay Packers insider Bill Huber of Sports Illustrated, Rodgers personally reached out to his former team to ask about the price and availability of wide receiver Romeo Doubs. The phone call raised eyebrows across the NFL, not only because it shows Rodgers is directly invested in shaping the Steelers’ roster, but also because it highlights Pittsburgh’s ongoing search for reliable depth at wideout after reshaping their receiver room in recent years.

"Rodgers called on Monday, one day before roster cuts; interestingly, he asked about the status of receiver Romeo Doubs," Huber said in his article. "Exactly two months after Tuesday’s roster cuts, the Packers will visit the Steelers on Oct. 26."

Doubs, who has shown flashes of becoming a dependable playmaker during his three seasons in Green Bay, would bring both familiarity for Rodgers and immediate help for the Steelers’ passing attack. Doubs’ rookie season came in 2022, which was also Rodgers’ final year with the Packers.

During that campaign, Doubs hauled in 42 passes for 425 yards and four touchdowns as a rookie playing alongside Rodgers. The fact that Rodgers personally called the Packers shows he would clearly welcome the chance to reunite with Doubs in Pittsburgh if he were available.

His presence could give Pittsburgh’s offense more balance, easing the pressure on DK Metcalf while providing Rodgers with a trusted target with whom he already has chemistry. While nothing is certain yet, Rodgers’ involvement signals that the Steelers are not content to stand still and may be prepared to make another aggressive move before the season begins.

Steelers Said To Be Calling Teams For Wide Receiver Help

It’s no secret that General Manager Omar Khan is always looking for ways to improve the roster. If there’s an opportunity to make the team better, he will certainly explore it. In this case, the Steelers are watching roster cuts across the league closely, hoping to find value. At the same time, they could also be working behind the scenes to pull off a big-time trade to solidify the wide receiver room.

Some believe the Steelers already have enough weapons in the passing game, but others argue they still need more help. Adding a veteran like Doubs via trade would be a major boost, especially considering the chemistry he already built with Rodgers in Green Bay. The problem, however, is that Packers Head Coach Matt LaFleur has suggested Doubs isn’t available. If that was just a bluff, Rodgers’ influence could potentially help push Pittsburgh closer to getting a deal done with his former team.
