"You Think You're F***ing Good?": Steelers' Danny Smith Absolutely Lit Up New Receiver Shortly After Signing

The Pittsburgh Steelers have a ton of beloved coaches on the staff. The group has been dragged every offseason of late however, due to the recent lack of postseason success. Regardless, players actually often come to Pittsburgh specifically because of the members of the staff. This includes Head Coach Mike Tomlin, as well as Special Teams Coordinator Danny Smith. Both coaches are highly respected around the NFL, and players have nothing but good things to say about playing for them.

The Steelers are a hard-nosed football team that often attracts players who have that same mindset. Ben Skowronek is one of those players. He is a special teamer who is also a wide receiver. He does the dirty work from the receiver spot, as he excels as a run blocker on the outside, and he has even lined up as an up-back and a fullback at certain points in his career. He was recently on Cam Heyward's podcast Not Just Football With Cam Heyward, and he was asked for a good story from his time with Smith.

"It was probably my first week being here, and I asked him [Danny Smith] a question in the special teams meeting and he said, 'You think you're f**king good? You've been on three teams f**king teams in three f**king years,'" Skowronek said. "My confidence was never lower. I was sitting there and I was like, 'Here we are.' But it was all love. I really like Danny too, he's a great coach."

Skowronek has had an interesting career so far. He was a critical member of the Los Angeles Rams' roster when the team won Super Bowl LVI at the end of the 2021 season. He played over 66 percent of the offensive snaps in the big game, and he was primarily used as an H-back in the offense for Los Angeles, while also contributing on special teams.

His statistics might not be spectacular, but Skowronek was an important piece of a team that wound up hoisting the Lombardi Trophy. Skowronek was traded to the Houston Texans during the 2024 offseason, but he was waived by the team when it was finalizing its roster. He then signed with the practice squad in Pittsburgh, and he really began to make an impact in November when he was brought back off of Injured Reserve. He caught some passes for the Steelers, while also being a reliable blocker and special teams player.

Right after Skowronek signed with the Steelers, he was scolded by Smith in the meeting room, although he might have been the most accomplished player in that special teams room as he won a Super Bowl while being an important member of the team. The fact that Skowronek still spoke about how much he likes Smith shows the kind of of relationships the coaching staff is able to put together in Pittsburgh.

Steelers' Ben Skowronek Could See A Bigger Role On Offense In 2025

Skowronek did not play a major role on offense during the 2024 season, but he could in 2025. He is currently the fifth wide receiver on the depth chart, and if any wide receivers ahead of him go down, he could see the field much more on offense. He only caught five passes for 69 yards in 2024, but there should be a path to him eclipsing those numbers during the 2025 season. He has also showcased a special relationship with quarterback Aaron Rodgers as the two worked together during the offseason, and that could be something that comes into play sometime down the road.

The wide receiver's main focus will probably be special teams, but he can be relied upon to contribute if needed.
