The Pittsburgh Steelers lack depth at the wide receiver position entering the 2025 season. Pittsburgh traded for DK Metcalf earlier in the offseason, but the team finds itself lacking a true number two option behind the former Seattle Seahawk. Calvin Austin lll could emerge as a legit number two, as the promising receiver will enter the most important season of his career in the final year of his rookie deal.

The Steelers have been rumored to be interested in trading for a quality second option behind Metcalf the entire 2025 offseason. Pittsburgh had ties to a number of free agents as well, as former Jacksonville Jaguars wideout Gabe Davis reportedly left his visit to the Steelers' facilities without a contract in place.
With multiple wide receivers remaining available on both the free agency and trade markets, former NFL General Manager Doug Whaley took a moment to share what he feels would be an excellent second option in Pittsburgh. Whaley said that he would like to see the Steelers trade for Las Vegas Raiders receiver Jakobi Meyers.
"I think he would be a very solid number two." Whaley stated. "That's what you'd be looking for... The thing about him, though, you could have him and DK Metcalf around for a couple of years."
Whaley then continued to talk about how Meyers could work well with a young quarterback in the future, as the Raiders wideout is 28 years old.
"Help a young quarterback," Whaley stated. "I would definitely like that. You got DK Metcalf, you bring in Jakobi Meyers, alright. Offensively, you're starting to get a nice foundation that can lead you to prolonged success."
Meyers would be an excellent second option behind Metcalf. The wide receiver had a very busy season last year in Las Vegas despite poor quarterback play, with Meyers hauling in a career high 1,027 yards on 87 receptions. The Raiders' star would benefit from playing with Aaron Rodgers as well, as Meyers could emerge as an elite deep ball threat alongside Metcalf should the Steelers trade for him.

Meyers is currently entering the final year of his contract. Pittsburgh would more than likely sign Meyers to an extension in similar fashion to Metcalf should they trade for the veteran, solidifying the Steelers' one-two punch at wide receiver for years to come. Meyers is coming off a career high in yards and receptions last season and could prove to truly benefit from a trade to Pittsburgh.

Steelers May Not Be Willing To Ship Large Trade Package For Meyers
Meyers would undeniably be a productive second option behind Metcalf. A trade for the Raiders' receiver will revolve around the veterans' price point, as Pittsburgh may not be willing to include a large trade package for Meyers. The Steelers still have young and promising receivers in Austin and Roman Wilson, as both wideouts could have a breakout year in 2025.
The addition of a receiver of Meyers' caliber could be a game-changer for Arthur Smith's offense. Meyers has quietly put together a very productive career with the Raiders and has played with poor quarterback play for the past few seasons. The Steelers trading for Meyers will more than likely come down to how much he costs, as Las Vegas could want a respectable return for the 28 year old receiver.
A trade for Meyers would instantly improve the Steelers' wide receiver situation. Meyers had career highs throughout multiple categories in 2024 and could truly benefit from catching passes from Rodgers. Fans are encouraged to keep a close eye on the situation as trade talks could ramp up prior to Week 1.
