Steelers' Mike Tomlin Facing New Challenge To Make Hall Of Fame

The Pittsburgh Steelers have never had a losing season under Head Coach Mike Tomlin. In his 18 seasons leading the franchise, Tomlin has consistently guided the team to winning records, an impressive feat highlighted by a Super Bowl victory early in his tenure. His ability to maintain stability and competitiveness over nearly two decades has made him one of the most respected coaches in the NFL, and his early success cemented his reputation as a franchise leader capable of delivering championships.

Despite this long-term consistency, Tomlin has not won a playoff game since the 2016 season, a drought that has frustrated some fans who are ready for a new era. While there is a ton of chatter among Steelers supporters about the team needing fresh leadership, it is widely understood that Tomlin is not going anywhere. His influence over the locker room, ability to develop talent, and track record of regular season success make him an indispensable figure in Pittsburgh, even as the postseason victories have become less frequent. At least in the mind of Art Rooney II.

National media and analysts largely consider Tomlin a surefire Hall of Fame candidate, but Steelers insider Gerry Dulac offered a different perspective in a recent chat for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. When asked about Super Bowl-winning Head Coach Barry Switzer, Dulac’s response suggested that Tomlin’s path to the Hall of Fame might not be as straightforward as many believe. 

"With the new HOF voting setup, it's getting tougher for coaches to get in," Dulac said.

Obviously, the question was somewhat tongue-in-cheek regarding Tomlin. Switzer coached the Dallas Cowboys for just four seasons, while Tomlin is approaching two decades of leadership in the NFL, which carries significant weight when it comes to Hall of Fame consideration. 

In his brief tenure, Switzer went 40-24 as a head coach and captured a Super Bowl with the Cowboys, a remarkable achievement over such a short span. Tomlin’s longevity and sustained success, however, set him apart, making his Hall of Fame case more about consistency and impact over time rather than a brief, spectacular run.

While Tomlin’s regular season accomplishments are undeniable, lingering questions about his postseason success and long-term championship impact could complicate his legacy. Even one of the NFL’s most consistent and respected coaches faces scrutiny when it comes to Hall of Fame consideration, and the lack of playoff victories in recent years leaves room for debate. 

Another argument that emerges is a comparison to Switzer. Switzer achieved remarkable success in just four seasons, including a Super Bowl win, which some could argue is more impressive than Tomlin’s early championship followed by a period of postseason disappointments. This contrast raises an interesting question about how the Hall of Fame evaluates coaching greatness: is sustained consistency over decades more valuable than a brief but explosive period of success?

While Tomlin has faced criticism from some Steelers fans, he is not going anywhere and has signed an extension with the team. Tomlin will remain the head coach at least through the 2027 season. 

In the 2025 season, if Tomlin and Aaron Rodgers can lead the team on a deep playoff run, he will have a chance to strengthen his Hall of Fame resume and legacy. Another season without a playoff win, however, would make it very difficult for Tomlin to maintain his status as one of the elite coaches in the league.
