Mike Tomlin Sends Brutal Message To Steelers' Defense After Troubling Week 1 Performance

The Pittsburgh Steelers were fortunate to walk away from MetLife Stadium with a win on Sunday. It was a shocking offensive explosion from both the New York Jets and Steelers for most of the game. The over was set at 37.5 points and the game finished with the Steelers winning 34-32, so obviously there were far more points scored than initially expected by the experts.

Many anticipated the Steelers running game to be heavily featured on Sunday, but instead it struggled to find any rhythm and was not effective. The team rushed the football 20 times for just 53 rushing yards. Averaging just 2.7 yards per carry on the ground is not a recipe for success in the NFL. However, it worked on Sunday, thanks to four touchdown throws from Aaron Rodgers

On the other side of the ball, many pundits thought the Steelers defense would shut down the Jets running game. That didn't happen as the Jets dominated rushing the ball 39 times for 182 rushing yards and three touchdowns. After the win, Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin addressed the media and spoke candidly about what stood out to him despite the struggles his defense faced.

"We needed to," Tomlin. "You play today and you evaluate tomorrow. The game is not always going to go the way that you like. When you start measuring it in  the midst of play, you do not have enough energy or gas to do what you suggested."

Tomlin made it clear that while he was disappointed in the inability to stop the run defensively and in the lack of execution offensively on the ground, he was impressed with his team’s mental toughness and willingness to fight through adversity.

Pittsburgh Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin roams the practice field as his team works out during a 2025 training camp practice at St. Vincent College in Latrobe, PA.

He praised the Steelers for not dwelling on mistakes during the game, but instead continuing to play with focus and determination until the very end.

"That is what I liked about it," Tomlin said. "Do I like how we played? Do I like our inability to stop the run? No. But I did love our mindset. Our mindset showed that we were game for the fight. We were not measuring it today; we were playing and playing to win. When you do those things, you have enough gas in the tank to finish it in the end."

Tomlin highlighted the team’s mindset as the key factor in pulling out the narrow victory. He stressed that measuring and analyzing mistakes during play can drain a team’s energy, but his players showed discipline by staying engaged in the battle and doing whatever it took to win.

While there were clear flaws in Pittsburgh’s performance, Tomlin’s takeaway was that his team showed resilience, toughness, and the ability to finish strong. Those qualities can define a successful season if built upon moving forward.

Steelers' Ramsey Locked In With Pittsburgh

One of the most noticeable differences in the game was defender Jalen Ramsey. The Steelers’ highly paid defense did not look great and made Justin Fields look outstanding for most of the game, but Ramsey’s hit on Garrett Wilson to help seal the win was exactly what Tomlin was talking about. He came to Pittsburgh with his usual edge and is already making an impact on the team, showing why the front office made the move to bring him in.

This defense still has a lot of work to do, but Ramsey made sure they finished with momentum. His physicality and veteran presence stood out when it mattered most, reminding everyone that even on a tough day, the Steelers have leaders capable of delivering game-changing plays. If the rest of the defense can build on that example, Pittsburgh will have the chance to tighten up and become a more complete unit as the season moves forward.
