Steelers Have Legitimate Issue To Solve Without A Resolution: "Isn't Getting Any Better"

After Week 1 of the Pittsburgh Steelers' 2025 season, fans thought that the team could be a dangerous force in the AFC. Following a Week 2 performance that was disastrous against the Seattle Seahawks, alarms were sounded in the Steel City. It has been a rocky beginning to the regular season campaign, and it appears as if there are more questions than answers overall. One problematic area is the offensive line. Aaron Rodgers has been on the ground way to much for a 41-year-old, and the rushing attack has yet to truly get going for the franchise.

Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers looks on with intense focus in street clothes as the team works out during a 2025 training camp practice at St. Vincent College in Latrobe, PA.

The hope was always that 2023 first-round pick, Broderick Jones, would turn it around in 2025 because he was finally getting a chance to operate at left tackle full-time. Unfortunately, he has not looked like a new offensive lineman, as he was responsible for giving up three sacks in Week 1 versus the New York Jets. There's no way to know if he will trend in a positive direction for the rest of the year.

In a recent fan chat, insider Ray Fittipaldo of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette was asked about Jones and his current technique. Sadly, he is far from confident that the big man up front is improving at all.

"Jones' technique isn't getting any better," Fittipaldo wrote. "I guess eventually it's on the coach, but as I said earlier, is the player receptive to coaching? Is he able to break bad habits? At what point do you bench the player?"

Steelers Offensive Line Coach Pat Meyer has received plenty of criticism in his own right in recent years, and he could be on the hot seat if his unit continues to hold the offense back. Fittipaldo went into some more detail about Jones and the line's inability to adjust in certain situations.

"The key to picking up stunts is for the guards and centers to remain on the same plane," Fittipaldo noted. "It's much easier to pass the defenders off when that happens. You'll see the Steelers get into trouble when their interior players are on different planes. That creates holes in the gaps the defenders can get through."

Pittsburgh's roster was supposed to be built to win in the trenches. That has not been the case through two weeks of the 2025 season. If it doesn't improve rather quickly, it's going to be a long year for Rodgers, who already is the oldest player in the NFL.

Steelers offensive tackle Broderick Jones (#77) walks on the field at St. Vincent College as the team practices during 2023 training camp in Latrobe, PA.

The key to a successful offense is not just about having a formidable quarterback, but keeping him upright too. The Cincinnati Bengals are currently feeling firsthand how an awful blocking scheme can completely ruin a season. If the Steelers want to compete in the AFC, it could be argued that it will only be possible if the big men up front find some kind of resolution, starting with Jones.

That isn't the case just yet, as there are evident issues that are present. Another key area that has been far from impressive is the running game. Pittsburgh is not necessarily committing to it, which in turn, is allowing defenses to plan for the pass. An offense needs fluidity and consistency to help its team win games, and that is not currently the case for the Steelers entering Week 3.

Steelers Can't Afford Many More Bad Weeks From The Offensive Line

Time will tell how this unit develops, but Meyer is running out of chances in the Steel City. Pittsburgh needs Jones to take a big leap forward, and he does not have much time. The organization has to decide whether or not to pick up his fifth-year option for the 2027 season once May of 2026 rolls around and, right now, the franchise would absolutely be declining it.

Do you think that the Steelers are getting close to benching Jones for his inability to develop, or is that the coaching staff's fault? Let us know in the comments below!
